Never seen the Hangover. Never wanted to. Doubt it would be my cup of tea.

And yes, Shakespeare's comedies are not particularly funny to much of the modern audience, especially when read instead of performed, mainly due to the differences in language. (I find that in a good performance, the language barrier largely disappears.)

And SOME of Mark Twain's work is less than uproarious due to the passage of time, yes, even though quite a lot I personally find hysterical. (And yet, even if I recognize that Twain is the far more accomplished writer, I still find that in most cases I am more likely to laugh out loud at something by Dave Barry. And I KNOW that a lot of HIS stuff will not age well.)

Aristophanes and Moliere I've only ever read as part of an assignment. In those cases you are looking not only through the lens of time but also translation, unless you read ancient Greek or French, so their original humor would be harder for me to appreciate, I expect.

In any case, your ability to point to some examples that have stood the test of time better than most does nothing to address the notion that works CAN be dated, and that humor that has to be explained is less funny than the same humor would be to somebody for whom explanation was unnecessary. And also totally fails to address Pogo specifically. The fact that I find that much of Twain, for example, HAS aged well, has no bearing at all on whether the same is true of Pogo. Unless you are asserting that Pogo was written by Mark Twain?

If you think that Pogo is one of the examples of humor that does not suffer from becoming dated, address THAT point. To try to argue, from a few examples of writers that HAVE endured through the long years, that are generally acknowledged as being EXCEPTIONAL, that this somehow means that in ALL CASES humor ages well, is absurd. Better to argue for Walt Kelly, and Pogo's, exceptional status, than to try to argue that humor aging well is a general rule.

It's all relative. Shakespeare's comedies crack me the fuck up, but obviously don't mean much to others. Don't change their inherent value as a source of humor.

If the end result is still that some stuff that used to be funny isn't any more, what's the difference?

It's still funny. People just don't get it anymore.

You're not explaining "the joke" if you have to tell someone who King Louis the XIV is. You're explaining the context.

Yeah, sorry. Not really the right place for the discussion. Guess I got wrapped up in the fact that it actually BECAME a discussion, rather than just "That's retarded". I'll stop now.

But for the record, I'm NOT pretty. Too hairy for that.

Nah, Shakespeare is just better and funnier than Moliere.

Perhaps funny story: a friend and I decided to go see an independent theater's version of Twelfth Night. I tried to convince her girlfriend to come with us, but she said if she had to listen to Shakespeare, she'd just laugh out loud. I told her I thought she could get away with it since it's a comedy.

I don't think those are rejected licences, but part of the cuusko project or something like that. Its where we can come up with a model or line and if it gains enough support it may be per sued by Lego. Maybe they didn't get the support needed.
