Initial Retailer Reaction to DC Distribution Plan Is Mixed - UPDATED
Quote:
Updated 10:30pm: Newsarama continues to receive more reaction from comic book retailers about DC's plan to publish new comics beginning April 28 via two new distributors (see below).

The latest comes from Marc Nathan of Cards Comics & Collectibles in Reisterstown, MD and founder and proprietor of the Baltimore Comic-Con. Here is his written reaction in its entirety:

"DC Comics stopped being the direct market's favorite publisher when they began the Walmart deal. This is just more of the same. Public safety for our extended families should be our first thought, not selling the next issue of Batman. My store is a Diamond Comic Distributors store. I dealt with Heroes World and others in the 1990’s. It went poorly for everyone. Clearly, DC did not learn from history. Nor do they seem to care for the orders of my state or Governor. Do they believe my shut down is not for the safety of my great state of Maryland or do the simply don’t care? Their actions suggest the worst of their motives.

"I will NOT be signing up for this. I will wait for Diamond to reopen. A company run by people who love comics, it’s history and it’s passionate fans. There will be a time for the next issue of Batman, and it will be needed then. Not when it’s release puts people future in danger.

Original story: With DC moving towards its third week with no new comic books (most retailers last shipped new weekly content on March 28, DC included), the publisher has announced a plan to resume shipping new titles on April 28 utilizing a new distribution system based around prominent mail order retailers Midtown Comics and DCBS.

But reaction from retailers has been mixed, with some praising DC’s choice to resume shipping and others questioning whether the move will do more longterm harm than good as many retailers remain closed for business due to coronavirus quarantine regulations.

Joe Field of Concord, CA’s Flying Colors Comics laid out some of his issues with the plan, citing in particular the new distribution system’s reliance on Midtown and DCBS, who some retailers view as direct competitors.

“A lot isn't known yet, but a lot is being asked of retailers at a time when we're all very vulnerable. DC called this a ‘solution-focused plan’ but it initially feels like more chaos than a carefully and responsibly crafted plan,” Field explained. “We don't know what discount and terms we'll get from these new distributors. We do know that handing over our sales information to directly competing deep discounters is not attractive or workable.”

“DC did say all product will still be available through Diamond and that seems to be the more responsible course of action for most retailers, given current circumstances regarding COVID,” he stated. “And if I'm getting something wrong here, it's because the communication is incomplete, ill-timed and rather inconsiderate.”

Phil Boyle of Florida-based retailer chain Coliseum of Comics laid out his opinion on the plan more bluntly, stating “This is the most damaging and horrible decision DC could have made.”

Conversely, Jenn Haines, owner of The Dragon, which operates three stores in Guelph, Ontario which are currently open only for mail order business praised the decision.

“I think businesses should be able to adapt into the forms that they need. If DCBS and Midtown built a successful business that includes a large mail-order component, so be it. I don’t begrudge them success,” Haines said. “Look, DC is trying hard to get us our books. I don’t think we have time for all this right now in this industry. We don’t need drama. We need to come together as an industry. We need to build each other up, not tear each other down.”

“I do intend to order product. I'll be checking what my subscribers need and order to those numbers,” she concluded. “I'm ordering from Lunar. Diamond cannot direct-ship into Canada right now."

Retailer Ryan Higgins of Sunnyvale, CA’s Comics Conspiracy echoed Haines’ decision to stock DC product, stating “It's probably the best situation we could have hoped for, short of Diamond shipping books at the same time.”

“It's a slow roll out which will gives stores the ability to work with reduced staff or process orders from home. Holding back Batman #92 is probably the best idea until we're all on the same playing field,” Higgins continued. “Selling five copies of Daphne Byrne isn't going to save the industry, but it's needed to keep customer engaged with comics and their local shops.”

Batman writer James Tynion IV subsequently announced Batman #92 will go on sale sometime in June.

“As for DCBS and Midtown handling the distribution, who cares. It's like when retailers complain about Amazon,” he concluded. “These places already have your customer’s info, every customer knows about them, and yet they still shop with you. Open the account, order the comics your customers want. DC is doing the right thing.”

Still, Field summed up some of the overall worries he feels for the industry at large – and DC in particular.

“I wonder if all DC/WB/AT&T staffers will be in their offices full time by the end of April when they expect retailers to be in our shops full time to handle this new product?” Field wrote. “Some shipping lanes are still closed. Many areas of the country are shut down until mid-May at the earliest...and most comic retailers are not able to operate near 100%.”

“I wonder if WB movies will be in theaters by April 28 (they won't). Why expect more of comic book retailers than the company does of its movie wing?

"Why is there so much more pressure on DC Comics than there is on WB?” Field questioned. “Thinking about that, that's why I'm hoping there's another shoe to drop. Maybe this is a corporate tactic to move DC/WB/AT&T further away from the comics specialty market. Maybe DC is content with two mail order houses selling all their periodicals so they can then move all their book product to Random House?”

“I'm hoping the relationship between DC and Diamond can be healed, not just because it's good for those two companies but because it's good for the entire comics specialty channel,” Field concluded. “Still hoping there are more and better moves left in this gut-wrenching chess game.”

DC Partners with ONI/LION FORGE and BINC For United Fund to Benefit U.S. Comic Shops
Quote:
With various creators and publishers raising money to benefit U.S. comic shops via the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (BINC), those funds are now being organized into a distinct relief effort called the Comicbook United Fund - with DC and Oni Press/Lion Forge in on the ground floor.

"We are grateful and humbled to work with industry leaders Oni-Lion Forge and DC. By working together to create the Comicbook United Fund, Oni-Lion Forge and DC are demonstrating their dedication to comic retailers across the nation," said BINC Executive Director Pam French. "BINC is honored to help carry out their philanthropic vision. The outpouring of support and innovative ideas we've seen from across the industry has been inspiring and gives us great hope for the future."

DC and Oni Press/Lion Forge have signed on as foundational partners in BINC's Comicbook United Fund, which will include funds raised in several previous and ongoing charity efforts including DC CCO/Publisher Jim Lee's #60sketchesover60days auctions, at least half of the combined #Creators4Comics auctions' proceeds, and DC's own $250,000 donation earlier this month.

"The comic industry has a long history of banding together to protect and promote the art form we all love. We hope that this incredible action from DC will inspire a new wave of generosity and support for the great number of individuals and shops struggling through these times," said Oni-Lion Forge Publishing Group President/Publisher James Lucas Jones. "Comics is an expansive community that still feels like a close-knit family, and these efforts feel like we are helping family members."

In 2019, Lion Forge started the Forge Fund with BINC to raise funds for comic book stores in need, and to date has raised $100,000 - with 5% of the proceeds from some of Oni/Lion Forge's titles since also being donated to the fund. That money is also being rolled into the Comicbook United Fund.

"If this pandemic has taught us anything it’s how precious and fragile the things that bring us happiness are, so we must protect the lifeblood of our industry," Lee said in the announcement. "Oni-Lion Forge saw the need for this type of relief before there was a crisis, which is why DC is proud to now stand alongside them in this time of need for our retailers."

Anyone can donate directly to this fund at this secure link: https://secure.donationpay.org/bincf...BookUnited.php

Open to U.S.-based brick-and-mortar comic shops only, retailers can apply for assistance at this link: https://www.bincfoundation.org/appli...re-assistance/

I don't expect everything to work perfectly right off the bat. But at least we have a tentative date for new books.

I notice that there isnt much of interest in the first week. Probably smart to test the new system with books that are basically throwaways and not some top tier stuff that any real effort or resources went into producing.

^Thanks. I'm told my LCS' Facebook said they're open for old books on the second week in May and new books as this says. Don't get how they can say that when Gov. Murphy, here in NJ, has not yet announced a timetable for non-essential retail reopening.

Almost everything I would be buying is accounted for with new dates. I don't see Justice League #45, The Question: the Deaths of Vic Sage #3 and #4. Or the Doom Patrol tpb for Weight of the Worlds #1-7. So those 4 things and I am good.

Diamond's estimated ship dates might still be out of whack, but they list JL#45 as 5/27/2020 and Question #3 as 6/17/2020. Question #4 can't be found in the system, while the Doom Patrol TPB is cancelled without comment - although both will most likely be re-solicited soon.

Thank you sir!

Well, my LCS did a kind of curbside service and I finally got ‘new’ comics (the ones from March 25) for the first time since mid March. [The same day my favorite wrestler became woman’s champion, so it was a good day for me.]

So, Hypo, my understanding is that if my LCS is not using one of the alternate shippers (which is the case) these are the full lists for Diamond on those days, right?

You've made my life easier before heading for comics.

Most of those issues in that. 2nd half if the GL/GA run have NEVER been collected or reprinted before. Inching ever closer to collecting the 224 issues of volume 2!

I'm still looking for a relatively economical way to fill in the gap in my SA GL collection, issues #58-75. I read those issues once, when I borrowed the B&W collection from the library, but I couldn't bring myself to buy B&W reprints of GL, and the library no longer has a copy. I can't afford to buy the floppies, and haven't noticed any color collections of those that are remotely economical (I think they MIGHT have appeared in one of the huge Omnibus editions, with a bunch of overlap with stuff I already had, for a large pricetag.)

I believe this is the shipping list regardless of what distributor your LCS is using but could be wrong.

Bleeding Cool: DC Tells Diamond Retailers That Comics Will Be Late
Quote:
DC Comics has issued the following notices to comic book retailers of late comics coming from Diamond Comic Distributors. They appear to be a little salty about it. They state "DC has made every effort to support Diamond's return to operations and to ensure that our products are received at their warehouses on time for their scheduled on-sale dates. Unfortunately, once DC product is received by our distributors for a specific in-store date, they are responsible for how and when they are delivered to comics shops. If you experience shipping delays, we encourage you to work with your distributor to resolve these issues. We have communicated with your distributor regarding these problems. Our expectation is that they will address these problems in a timely manner with you." Here's the list of delayed DC titles, and by how much.
  • The Flash #754 variant: Delayed to an on-sale date of June 2 for all retailers.
  • Aquaman #59 main cover: Delayed to an on-sale date of June 2 for all retailers. If any retailers receive this main cover edition periodical prior to, please hold them and do not release before June 2nd.
  • Aquaman #59 variant cover: All copies of this issue have been delivered to all distributors for an on sale date of May 26.
  • Batman and the Outsiders #12: We have confirmed that Diamond has enough copies to fulfill all orders, and will keep the May 26 on sale date.
  • DC Goes to War: Delayed to an on-sale date of June 9 for all retailers.
  • Martian Manhunter: Identity: Delayed to an on-sale date of June 9 for all retailers.
  • The Terrifics Vol. 3: The God Game: Delayed to an on-sale date of June 9 for all retailers.
  • Wonder Woman Vol. 1: The Just War: Delayed to an on-sale date of June 9 for all retailers.
  • Wonder Woman: Tempest Tossed: Delayed to an on-sale date of June 9 for all retailers.
  • Young Justice Vol. 2: Lost in the Multiverse: Delayed to an on-sale date of June 9 for all retailers.
