A couple points.

I don't view what happened here as a retcon. Nothing that Van Jensen wrote retroactively changed anything that happened. Fatality was forcibly made a Star Sapphire. That was written by Geoff Johns. Her feelings for John Stewart were either a sham or amplified by like x10,000. In any case, they weren't natural. The first thing she does when she's released from her Star Sapphire crystal is seek out John Stewart to get lovey-dovey with him, if I recall correctly. Something is not right with that situation, considering just before she NATURALLY hated him and wanted to kill him.

It's just that Tomasi and Johns either didn't care they were putting John Stewart in a more or less "fake" relationship (I'm betting on this one), or they never got around to addressing all the issues with that relationship. But Van Jensen did not change anything that they did.

This would be the equivalent of Clark Kent making Lois drink a love potion so that she would love him instead of her having natural feelings for him (which actually sounds like a legitimate plot to a Silver Age comic).

Also, we don't know how John Stewart will handle this situation yet. I'm pretty sure Van Jensen is against having John Stewart moping around all the time. I think John has learned a lot from his "relationship" with Fatality about looking forward to the future instead of being fixated on the past, and he'll apply that principle to his current situation.

I'll keep this short because I've already explained myself on this. The only way I would feel somewhat ok with this situation is if it is revealed that the ring has the same type of effect on Carol as it did Fatality. Carol seems to be in complete control of the ring, so why can't Fatality be in control.

Perhaps it makes a difference whether you put the ring on willingly? As I recall, the Sapphire Ring DID have a big effect on Carol's personality and motivations on those occasions when she didn't choose to wear it (though who knows how much of that is still in continuity). I'd be fine with there being a difference between what happens when you put the ring on willingly and when it is forced on you, if they were to go that direction (though I doubt it will be specifically addressed).

Also, Fatality was, presumably, mostly changed by the time spent locked inside a big Sapphire crystal (unless THAT'S been retconned out). Wearing the ring may have served simply to maintain the changes wrought by that experience, rather than bringing about such changes simply by wearing it. That would work for me as an explanation, too, if they bothered to use it.

I will admit, though, that I'm not thrilled by the "backwards step" here, if only because I see little point to the whole development of the relationship in the first place if this is what was going to be the final end of it. The story of their relationship has little meaning if the end result is that Fatality feels exactly the same way about John as she did to begin with. Could have skipped the whole thing and still had the same status quo (unless they are going to have John obsessing over it, which I would get tired of very quickly).

It's also possible the ring is having an effect on Carol now too, which would explain how she's acting towards Kyle. Love is one of the extremes of the spectrum, so it would make sense it would be more controlling than many of the others, even if the user wasn't entirely aware of the effect.

brother can't catch a break.Maybe John will get with her down the line again, if not, then hopefully, maintain his focus as a badass GL.

Damn Right! Both were directly responsible for neglecting John Stewart in the comics for years. Especially after the succesful Justice League TV series with millions of fans and viewers worldwide. How stupid is that from a commercial kind of view. This is something I still can't comprehend. While emphasizing their childhoods wet dream Hal Jordan. John's Didio's and Lee's leave is long overdue. They spoiled the whole DC Universe with their crappish ideas.

Maybe DC will have something where John inadvertedly impregnated both women, would make a tremendous storyline.

That is definitely still in continuity. This image appears in GLC #34, and it shows Fatality sealed in the crystal:

I am with you on this one. I started a whole thread in the KYLEVERSE to complain about the dynamic between him and Carol as soon as that whole mess started. Seeing this happen has given me a false sense of hope that relationship will end similarly to this one.

On the issue itself, I have loved John taking the lead in the book but I am so damn tired of him being the beaten down Lantern. The Futures End tie in really feeds off all of the garbage that's followed him since he destroyed Mogo and it takes him to an even angrier place than we have seen him before. I'm getting tired of it.

But Carol has always had either the ring or the gem... does that mean it would mean her feelings toward Hal have always been bullshit too?

This was a good issue... but I don't like the John-Fatality thing so casually relegated to "Oh, it was the ring. Sorry." Seems cheap.

Of course Johns is involved. He's just got the direct hatchet man anymore.

Well I don't think so since she loved Hal before she became a Star Sapphire

Great issue, awesome plot twist. Nice to see the newer team in a good stride. I hope they keep the momentum and go for a lot more issues like this.
