^Yep, that's pretty much what I mean. I like both Joel and Mike's tenures, but I think the show picked up pace as it went along. It was probably as much to due with the writing team and with their popularity than with any actual superiority of Mike.* Despite Joel being show runner or whatever he is, the pace of this new one feels more like the later seasons than the early seasons.

*It does speak to Mike Nelson's humor and ability that he was essentially hired as an intern for MST3K. Then, the guys thought he was so funny that he was added to the writing staff and moved up to head writer and eventually was the natural choice to replace Joel. At the cult level, it's the American dream!

Could you bootleg it for me? I'll be busy and there's nowhere local that I can view it.

Didn't make it myself. I felt less sad about that since it wasn't really live and the riff is available on DVD.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return Renewed for Season 2 At Netflix

Quote:
We’ve got movie sign! “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return” has officially been renewed for a new season at Netflix, Variety has learned.

The announcement, which can be seen above, came at the conclusion of the annual Thanksgiving marathon of the show that runs on YouTube. While this will be the second season of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” on Netflix, it will be the twelfth season of the show overall. It originally aired on a Minneapolis UHF station starting in 1988 before being picked up by Comedy Central and then the Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy). The original series ran for 10 seasons and 197 episodes before going off the air in 1999.

Series creator Joel Hodgson and Shout! Factory launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the show back in November 2015. The campaign raised more than $6.3 million, breaking a Kickstarter record previously held by the “Veronica Mars” movie. The money raised allowed them to produce 14 new episodes for the show’s eleventh season, including a Christmas special.

The series is set on the Satellite of Love where a human host (Jonah Ray) is forced to watch a never-ending stream of bad B movies. In addition to Ray, the series also stars Baron Vaughn as the voice of Tom Servo, Hampton Yount as the voice of Crow, Felicia Day as Kinga Forrester, and Patton Oswalt as Max, a.k.a TV’s Son of TV’s Frank. Hodgson executive produces along with Elliott Kalan, Richard Foos, Bob Emmer, Garson Foos, Jonathan Stern, and Harold Buchholz. The series is produced by Satellite of Love, LLC, Alternaversal Productions, LLC and Undiscovered North American Ape Pictures.

A fitting, but sad follow-up to that last post:

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return NOT picked up for a 3rd season at Netflix

Actually, although I liked that show, I’m pretty happy with all the Rifftrax stuff out there.

One thing about that show is that they mocked several movies that really weren't that bad, and gave them a reputation they didn't deserve.

They definitely riffed movies that weren't that bad. The movie's choice of This Island Earth stands out. But I don't know how much they really hurt the rep of those movies. They seem to still have their fans and the people who only watched and dismissed them because it was MST3K were unlikely to have given them a chance anyway.

But I would argue they also have done more to bring attention to movies that would otherwise be ignored. I have a real soft spot for Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and own it on regular DVD, but I wouldn't have heard of it without MST3K.
