As far as the "supersonic submarine" goes, I assume they mean the speed of sound in air. Because sound travels MUCH faster in water. In seawater, a vessel travelling the speed of sound would be going almost 3500 mph. That seems...unlikely.

Nope, that's what they mean. The article states Shanghai to San Francisco in under two hours, but if you compare it to this one, you'll see they are talking about a distance of 8,783 km or 6,134 miles in roughly 100 minutes ... BUT it's really a torpedo and it can only go in a straight line ... but it's still just a theory, so you're "unlikely" estimation may be correct.
