The Undertaker and His Pals (1966)

"It will be painless if we dunk you fast."

In the style of a Herschell Gordon Lewis movie, but not as gory or fun as one of his and definitely not as funny as it was going for---though several of the commenters on Youtube (where I streamed it) would apparently disagree.

I Kill Giants (2018)

"Little warrior, you fought with honor. But I did not come for her, I came for you."

Middle-schooler Barbara Thorson is antisocial and extremely imaginative, running off into the wilds of New Jersey to set up runes, wards, traps, and bait tests in her endless hunt for actual giants to slay. While she doesn't get along with her brother and has a difficult relationship with her sister, she manages to strike up a relationship with a new student. But as the school psychologist tries to open her up and a school bully targets her, she may have to face the reality that she has spent so much effort denying.

I'm not gonna lie, this is a very unusual film. I didn't know it was adapted from a graphic novel, I just saw it suggested on Netflix, but I was looking forward to seeing just what kind of giant-slaying madness was in store for me.

The beginning is weird, almost confusing and cryptic and it feels conflicted, showing you Barbara's secret rituals and trap-testing antics and whatnot, no voiceover to explain a damn thing. And yeah, it seems like she's imagining the whole thing...until you see hear and then see something huge following her, a real goddamn giant.

As the film progresses it takes more and more turns, and we see Barbara doesn't interact well when people try to dig into her personal life (the psychologist means well, but keeps setting her off, enough to make you realize that the main character may be mentally unsound). She expresses a borderline psychosis as she absolutely refuses to address a severe personal issue, and we see that it is really affecting her siblings, placing an enormous burden on her sister to support the family because no one else can.

On the other hand, though it becomes clear her magical quest is a distraction and shield from reality, it is impressive and at times moving. Her fight against the forest giant is harrowing, and when her weapon, Coveleski (named after the old-time Phillies player), is finally unveiled in all its glory, it's a total fist-pump moment.

Something to note: though it's made fairly obvious that Barbara is very likely hallucinating the entire thing (there are a ton of clues throughout), there's also just enough leeway that she might not be (we don't see the dead giant in the trainyard, there's a puddle possibly formed in the footstep of said giant that another character sees, second character also hides during climax and so doesn't actually see the fight, freak storm during climax is noted as being rare rather than outright impossible). I don't think it lessens the story that it's all in her head, because it's about her dealing with severe personal loss, and damn if I wasn't touched by what the final boss says to her or how skull-cracking defiant Barbara was when facing him (girl has serious grit).

I really did like this hidden gem. Highly recommend.

[Rifftrax:] Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

"Even her nose bleeds are sexy."

Men in Black International (2019)

"The universe has a way of leading you to where you're supposed to be, at the moment you're supposed to be there."

The fam and I seemed to agree that there was nothing wrong with this per se (besides being a bit predictable) and it was worth a watch, but it didn't seem to have the magic of the trilogy.

Extremely hard to watch, but absolutely brilliant in execution.

No Holds Barred (1989)

"Mean Gene, how dare you criticize how I dress?"

Tremors (1990)

“What kind of fuse is that?
-Cannon fuse
What the hell do you use it for?
-My cannon!"

Turned 30 today and I still prefer the practical and simple effects more than today’s CGI fests.

And, now, a multi-Oscar nominee. I gotta see it yet. Will probably just buy it with a discount coupon at B&N or something.

Undead (2003)

"When I was a kid, we f***ing respected our parents, we didn't f***ing' eat 'em!"

Meh. Seemed like it was aiming for horror comedy, but most of the jokes fell flat for me.

Masters of the Universe (1987)

"You're acting like torktums!"

Wanted to re-watch this since I got my Classics God Skeletor figure in, which was a long pre-order.

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983)

"And what are you doing this morning?
-It's a birth.
Ah. And what sort of thing is that?
-Well, that's where we take a new baby out of a lady's tummy.
Wonderful what we can do nowdays."

R.I.P. Terry Jones.

The Country of Beauties (1981)
[aka Island Women; aka Warrior Women]

"She practiced Virgin Kung-Fu. Now, all her work is wasted."

Goofy, but kind of fun. Not as much nudity as you'd expect for a movie about guys (some pirates, some treasure hunters, and some from the island of cast-off men) on an Amazon-women island.
