Default Have yet to read BN, wait for Absolute or... ?

I have not yet read a single page out of any Blackest Night books and I hear they have included some positive additions to the Absolute edition coming very soon.

Would it be worth my money to get the Absolute edition and fill in the blanks so-to-speak or would it be cheaper/or more fulfilling to read all the essential trades?

Keep in mind, I am a person with not a lot of time on my hands and I don't have an interest in reading every single possible issue there is. Is Absolute gonna be a good buy for me and what options or suggestions do you have?

To be honest, Blackest Night's art isn't that good to justify an absolute edition.

The essential books are as follows:
Blackest Night TPB
Green Lantern: Blackest Night TPB
Green Lantern Corps: Blackest Night TPB (actually not essential, but I enjoyed the story)

It can't be that bad, really?

Humor me. What are around 3-5 essential trades for BN? Are there that many?

You want an essential trade for Blackest Night?

Like I said,
This: http://www.amazon.com/Blackest-Night...blackest+night
And this: http://www.amazon.com/Green-Lantern-...blackest+night
And that: http://www.amazon.com/Blackest-Night...blackest+night

Everything else is just padding.

for what it's worth, "Blackest Night" brought me back to comics after 20 some odd years. I loved the hell out of it.

Myuserid is a notorious BN hater. Around this board BN is either viewed as the last hurrah for Geoff Johns or the beginning of the end. I'd wager the majority are in the former camp. You really do need to know the basic of BN to understand the new corps though.

I myself wouldn't bother with an Absolute Edition, but I might not be the best judge. I only have one Absolute book and I haven't read it yet. Plus I have all the floppies for BN.

I'd suggest the order I listed them in, as the BN trade is the main story, the Green Lantern trade expands the story and the GLC story is a side-story focusing on Kyle & Guy.

If you're just a casual fan I would just start with the Blackest Night trade or hardcover and read that. Don't bother spending 100 bucks on an absolute volume you might not even fall in love with. If you like BN proper, then try the 2nd and 3rd collections Socializing Mogo mentioned. In that order.

I grew to despise BN, but a lot of that had to do with all of the spinoff mini series DC pumped out. They were very formulaic, repetitive, and not as good. But the BN 8 part mini itself was actually good. And Ivan Reis' art was incredible. Not to mention consistent with no fill in issues.

I shelled out waaaaay too much cash for this crossover, and in all honesty it would've been easier just reading about the story on a web site somewhere. Depending on who your favorite DC characters are, you can go into the story from any number of view points since there were so many mini series' and tie ins. And 90% of it is moot now since the relaunch anyway. I'd stick with the main BN series and if it interests you enough go get the other stuff with any other favorite characters you may have.

This is why I didn't mention any of the Tales and Black Lantern Corps trades. All the stories were the same. Really.

The Absolute Edition isn't nearly inclusive enough, especially for the price. You could pick up the BN mini, the GL trade, the GLC trade, and Tales of the Corps trade for less money and get more story.

I hope you enjoy it. Blackest Night is one of my favorite events in 3+ decades of reading comics. Despite the relaunch rendering most of it irrelevant to the current continuity, I'm hopeful that we'll see a BN animated DVD movie or mini-series at some point.

As much as I love the Absolute format it's really hard for me to suggest blind buying a story in it...that's a lot of money to spend on something you may not love. Pick up the trades.

Yeah, I was looking at the on Amazon the other day, and it's $72. I was thinking about getting it, but I already have the Blackest Night HC (0-8) and Green Lantern Blackest Night HC.
