Default Cap's heel turn

When you've telling a long, long story, and you finally have to break in and tell your readers that no, you're really not shitting all over this iconic character, then you've screwed up, haven't you? No matter how this turns out, Marvel has burned up some of its customers' goodwill.

Heel turns are what you should do to characters who you can't get over with the fans. Not with your stars. And if they didn't mean for this heel turn to be real, then they should have kept the story short. The longer something goes on, the more real it looks.

Is it possible that they meant for this to be permanent, but had to back down when they saw the fans' reaction to it?

There are some interesting comments under this story.

As one person pointed out, the only thing they can do now is to give it a twist at the end. But those are very difficult to make work. Usually either the readers can predict what's coming, or the twist just doesn't wash. You have to be very clever to come up with a twist that's both surprising and believable.

You can't just say something like, "Fooled you! It was all a dream!"

So we'll see what happens.
