Read today, on Gameinformer.com, that Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft have scaled back support of SOPA, although the ESA is still onboard and from my understanding the three companies are members of the board.....so read into that what you will.

ps. be carefull with threads like these because kuhan has a major hard on for qward type threads in the general discussion and he has closed a few of mine down allready
I don't have a "hard on" for Qward threads in General Discussion. I only closed one and moved the other... to Qward. This thread is more on the line, but I give it a pass because it's not really "controversial" and everybody really should know about this.

SOPA could possibly get this very site shut down.

Halo creator says Stop Online Piracy Act could "cripple the kind of games we love to create," should it pass; DNS provision stripped from bill.

Halo creator Bungie is the latest high-profile gaming company to come out against the highly controversial Stop Online Piracy Act. In a statement posted to its website today, Bungie called the bill "a messy piece of legislation."

Bungie sees SOPA as a threat. Which is to say, deploy the SPARTANS.
"Bungie is opposed to any legislation that curtails free speech, stifles innovation, and prevents the open sharing of information on the Internet," the Washington-based studio wrote. "SOPA fits that bill. If it passes, it will hurt our community, the gaming community at large, and it could very well cripple the kind of games we love to create and play."

The studio also noted that, were the bill to pass the US House of Representatives, it would "negatively impact both the games we make and the people who play them." Bungie put out a call for gamers to educate themselves by reading the bill itself, as well as contacting their representatives in Congress to speak out against the piece of legislation.

In related SOPA news, CNET reports today that the bill's champion, Rep. Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas), has said that he will remove the Domain Name System provision. The DNS segment of the bill would have required Internet service providers to block websites based abroad that have been accused of piracy, according to CNET.

"After consultation with industry groups across the country," Smith said in a statement. "I feel we should remove DNS-blocking from the Stop Online Piracy Act so that the [U.S. House Judiciary] Committee can further examine the issues surrounding this provision. We will continue to look for ways to ensure that foreign Web sites cannot sell and distribute illegal content to U.S. consumers."

Authors of SOPA's Senate complement, the Protect IP Act (PIPA), have also said in recent days that they will remove the DNS language from their version of the bill.

Though the Entertainment Software Association officially endorses SOPA and PIPA, a number of studios have come out against it. These include Epic Games, Riot Games, and Mojang.

Default Internet Piracy - The Battle Rages On

New year, new news, new thread. Now that the second session of Congress is in place, the Internet piracy bills are gaining new momentum. Appears the White House finally weighed in. Hunker down and get ready for the battle!

"WASHINGTON The Obama administration raised concerns Saturday about efforts in Congress that it said would undermine "the dynamic, innovative global Internet," urging lawmakers to approve measures this year that balance the need to fight piracy and counterfeiting against an open Internet.

"White House officials said in a blog post that it would not support pending legislation that "reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk" or undermines the global Internet, cautioning the measure could discourage innovation and startup businesses...

"The administration was responding to measures that would allow the Justice Department to target offshore websites through Internet service providers that offer illegal copies of music, movies and television shows online. The Senate is expected to consider similar legislation later this month.

"Tech companies such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo and others have questioned the legislation, warning in a Nov. 15 letter that it would force new liabilities and mandates on law-abiding technology companies and require them to monitor websites..."

I read yesterday that Lamar has suggested suspending the area of the legislation that requires DNS blocking....apparrently he's met with several different tech leaders in the industry and they've all explained to him what I said months ago....That massive overhaul of DNS is a really bad idea with some pretty serious consequences.

Reports are coming out that the House Judiciary Committee is shelving SOPA after the President came out against the bill. Don't assume the issue is dead as the Protect IP Act is still alive in the Senate. Protect IP or PIPA has all the exact same problems as SOPA does. And it's possible that SOPA could be brought back in the future.
