There were oddly more copies ordered for GLs #38 than #37. Was there a variant cover of interest for that issue or something?

Nope. It was a part 2 for a 2-parter with no famous baddies and the alternate was by Shane Davis.

Eventually DC will realize they kept the GL franchise on the back burner too long.

Eventually.

The numbers are up. It looks like Hal's comic may have bottomed out in the 28Ks, but Green Lanterns is down to the 24Ks now. Of course I think that Green Lanterns is being puffed a bit by free returns for unsold copies, and that it's really down to 19K. The usual cancellation level for DCU titles is 17K on icv2.

As long as Johns is calling shots at DC, I don't have a lot of hopes for Green Lantern. Rather than the franchise doing something fresh, or revisiting old and forgotten stuff and building upon it in good ways (lots of stuff back there), or doing SOMETHING to get it out of this terrible rut it's been in, I think a Geoff Johns directed DC will just double down on more things we've been seeing the last 15 or so years, despite it being evident that people aren't really all that receptive to those approaches and concepts anymore, like Atrocitus, colored Corps, Jessica Cruz, bugallax, "wars" that are really just superhero/villain brawls with a lot of characters, and so on.

A Geoff Johns directed DC and its supporters will act like that stuff is hugely popular and working just fine, and there may even be some online review websites that praise it, but it will not show up in the sales numbers, or with actual enthusiasm from the fanbase. If there is going to be a Green Lantern Corps film (I dunno' if there is, but DC says there will be), I am reasonably certain it will feature concepts like Atrocitus, Colored Corps, and all of that, therefore, I belive DC will likely continue trying to peddle that in the comics, despite not many people really caring anymore.

I think the best thing for Green Lantern is for some uninhibited creator to appear, who knows the history of the franchise well, and who sees beyond just the Johns era. And who can work with characters and concepts like, say, Rose Hardin, Mosaic, Kari Limbo, and Tom Kalmaku, and a more classic Carol Ferris even, and give better roles for characters like Arisia, and present them in ways to craft new stories and attract new fans for them, while also making the old fans jizz over the nostalgia of having them around again and recognizing and appreciate them. That's what I would do if DC magically dumped Green Lantern in my lap.

The way things have been going lately has gotten very tiring, and very, very uninteresting. Venditti tries to work with older concepts every now and then, like the Darkstars, but because he doesn't have any passion for them, and is generally a mediocre writer at best, it's never all that good, and just seems like token service.

Trying to blame John's because Venditti sucks as a GL writer is beyond getting old at this point. He has had nothing to do with GL since he helped launch Green Lanterns. The fact that GL has become an afterthought and is selling at early 90's levels is on Didio head and no one else.

Well, that IS a whopper.

I'm of the persuasion that launching Green Lanterns at all is a rather sizable part of the problem going on here, since it has near everything to do with why every other Green Lantern character is crammed into one title, which is causing a whole host of problems. And it is all done for the sake of two characters created by Geoff Johns that some may feel are unnecessary and crowding things, and watering the GL concept down too much.

But as we know with the inception of Green Lanterns, Geoff Johns, DC Comics President, conspired with the writers to set the course for these titles for his Rebirth relaunch. Did he write them? Only the parts of the Green Lanterns Rebirth one-shot, but he has a part--a rather big one, I think--to play in Green Lantern's current state of affairs.

It's not just that the stories aren't written great (a fault of the writers), but I think the current status quo is quite problematic.

You keep pointing to Geoff being President like that somehow means he calls the shots when he doesn't. He has some stroke but he works for Dan who started the downfall of GL with the New 52 and who put Venditti a virtual unknown into what was a flagship DC book.

He then kept him on the book as sales and interest declined on the book. Which lead to the DC YOU debacle that drove off alot of fans and yet he continues to write GL. Which is selling almost record low numbers at the moment and DC continues to ignore the book and most of the characters.

I pointed to that one time. And if a President doesn't call the shots... who does?

The position of President (Geoff Johns), outranks the position of Publisher (Dan DiDio). Geoff Johns doesn't work for DiDio. At most, he works with him. The only people Johns answers to are perhaps Diane Nelson and some other Warner Bros. executives.

And that's all true (sort of. I don't think DC ignores the book anymore than they do many others). But I think you're being kind of naive in exonerating Geoff Johns from this entire thing. The Rebirth relaunch is Geoff Johns' project. He could have directed Green Lantern toward another path, but instead we have what we have now, and it's absolutely no coincidence that his characters (Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz) are occupying their own title while everyone else is crammed together in another. I think you're being somewhat (probably willfully) naive if you think Johns has nothing to do with that. I think that fact alone informs that he has something (quite a bit) to do with this, when taking into consideration that his position not only allows him to have something to do with it, but even encourages him to have something to do with it.

... so if you know Johns work WITH them, then why do you only always blame Johns and not include Didio and Lee?

When you consider the facts behind everything, who do you think has more to do with a title like Green Lanterns, and the general direction of Green Lantern?

Geoff Johns, who created the title characters in Green Lanterns, who helped write the first Green Lanterns issue, and who created many of the concepts the Rebirth Green Lantern books launched with (both Green Lantern titles launched with color corps/Emotional spectrum stories, which Geoff Johns is well known for doing), or Jim Lee... who... hasn't really been that involved with Green Lantern, ever, outside of drawing the character in Justice League or in some event, or some other books that aren't Green Lantern titles.

In short, it doesn't seem like this needs a lot of explaining, but there is a whole heck of a lot more to suggest a Geoff Johns influence than a strong Jim Lee one. The Green Lanterns title is a real clincher in my mind. And I mean, everyone should know that Rebirth is an initiative headed up by Geoff Johns.

According to Bleeding Cool, Diane Nelson is no longer Geoff Johns' boss. Apparently someone higher up than her wasn't happy with some of the stuff Johns was doing, and decided to have Johns report to him instead.

Bleeding Cool claims that Johns' toys are being taken away from him.

Are you talking about the article from October? Because that article didn't say it Johns wouldn't be reporting to Nelson anymore due to a higher up being unhappy with him, it was due to him moving over to the film side.

It's been awhile but if I remember correctly Johns wasn't promoted to President until 2016 after the DC YOU debacle which was orchestrated by Dan. That was basically the breaking point for GL and while he helmed the overall relaunch of Rebirth. It was Dan still calls the shots on the books that Geoff doesn' have a personal hand in which is pretty much almost every book.

While Johns did launch Green Lanterns, i've seen nothing that shows he's had anything to do with the direction of Hal's book. It's pretty clear to me that after he finished his GL run, he washed his hands of the character which he didn'the even bother to showcase in the Justice League book he was writing. Dan is to blame for Venditti still being on the book and Hal and the other earth lanterns basically being irrelevant for the past couple of years.

Geoff co-wrote the Green Lanterns Rebirth one shot... that's about it. He helped set the stage for that mess, so he IS partially to blame. They let Venditti do a Hal comic, then make Renegade Hal while other writers wrote the GLC out of the universe, then DC let him undo that mess and use all the Earth GL's anybody actually cares about in a single comic.

I'd say Geoff does have a hand in Green Lanterns, while the rest of the franchise he's already done toying with.

It's a shame because there's finally a writer who's put the GLC at odds with Brainiac, Starros, now General Zod... and the stories just seem lackluster. The EVS art doesn't even save the title. The two titles need to shuffle some characters around and focus on building up elements of the concept that have still remained mostly untouched. The city on Oa? The Ten Laws? The Corpse? Honor Guards with a purpose? Fists of the Guardians anybody?

Bleeding Cool is implying that Johns is being largely moved out of DC Entertainment's comics sector. And given the financial drubbing that Justice League took, it seems that his clout in DC's films has been reduced too. So the conclusion one might draw is that his realm will now be in television.

Venditti just announced issue #50 will be his last, thank God. Hopefully this means the GL books will get relaunched and we can get a writer who gets Hal and can help make Green Lantern a premier book again.

I liked his Rebirth run for the most part. A lot of good single issues, hard time nailing a complete arc.

I'm glad he is a better writer now but he wasn't bringing in any new readers and drawing much attention to the book.

I'm not sure who they will put on the book though, assuming it sticks around in its current form after he leaves. We might get someone worse.
