DC's Stargirl Potentially Adding More Justice Society of America Members
Quote:
That Hashtag Show reported on the latest casting breakdowns for Stargirl, which included several characters who might be members of the Justice Society of America. Previous casting announcements confirmed that several members of the JSA will be appearing in the new show. These include Lou Ferrigno Jr. as Hourman/Rex Tyler, Henry Thomas as Dr. Midnite/Dr. Charles McNider and Joel McHale as Courtney's predecessor Starman/Sylvester Pemberton.

The chief point of interest in the new casting announcement is the listing of a married couple, Sean and Ali Miller. Sean is described as an athletic Caucasian male in his 40s and an uber-jock, who runs the local trophy shop in Blue Valley and takes pride in selling only first place trophies. Ali is described as an Asian-American woman in her 40s, who is a gym teacher at the local high-school and an energetic, amusing soccer mom. The two are intensely devoted to their young daughter, Kerri, who is the school's star athlete. It is believed that Sean and Ali may be the JSA members Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle, which would make their child the future hero Jesse Quick.

The casting announcement goes on to list another recurring hero character named Arthur Matlock. Described as "a powerful man, both through physique, mind, and heart," Arthur is said to be a kind-hearted man who is not afraid to use his fists to solve problems if needed. Married to a woman named Ruth with a son named Ben, "Arthur Matlock" could be either Alan Scott/Green Lantern or Al Pratt/The Atom. The later seems more likely, however, given Pratt's reputation as a brawler in the comics.
‘Stargirl’ Casting: Meet Three Members Of Injustice Society
Quote:
The Injustice Society has recruited its first three members: The actors taking on the roles of Tigress, Sportsmaster and Dragon King on the upcoming live-action DC Universe series Stargirl will be Joy Osmanski, Neil Hopkins and Nelson Lee, respectively.

The Injustice Society, a volatile collective of master criminals, dates back to 1947 in the pages of DC Comics where the group was the underworld’s counterpoint to the Justice Society of America, DC’s first superhero team. The vintage heroes and villains have a prominent presence in Stargirl, which will premiere in 2019 on the DC Universe subscription streaming site.

Osmanski will portray Tigress. The official Stargirl character description for the lethal criminal: “Protecting and providing for her family, Paula Brooks hunts the world’s most dangerous game – humans – as the Tigress.”

Tigress has comic-book roots going back to 1947, although she was called the Huntress in those days. She was introduced as the nemesis of Wildcat and was inspired in part by another DC’s most famous femme fatale, Catwoman.

Osmanski’s credits include work in recurring roles on Netflix’s The Santa Clarita Diet, Freeform’s The Fosters, Lifetime’s Devious Maids and Fox’s The Following. She has also guest starred on iZombie, Younger and Lucifer. Osmanski is represented by Kazarian/Measures/Ruskin & Associates and Bohemia Group

Hopkins portrays Lawrence “Crusher” Crock, aka the Sportsmaster, a longtime enemy of the Justice Society of America. The Stargirl series description for Sportsmaster: “He sees his criminal pursuits as a game to win — and his competitors as targets to kill. The only thing more important to Crock than ‘the game’ is his family.”

The Sportsmaster first appeared in DC’s All-American Comics in 1947 and often used augmented athletic gear (e.g. exploding hockey pucks, rocket-launched baseball bats, etc.). He later teamed-up with (and married) the character that would become known as Tigress.

Hopkins is best known for his series regular work on El Rey Network’s Matador and his recurring role on ABC’s landmark series Lost in the role of Liam Pace. Hopkins is represented by SDB Partners and The Coronel Group

Lee portrays the mastermind Dragon King, a super-villain who hides his face and past. Dragon King is described in the official series notes as “a deadly and mysterious hooded man…this controversial scientist has been experimenting on himself and his victims since the 1940s.” The Dragon King was introduced in DC’s All-Star Squadron in 1981 as a former high-ranking scientist and occult expert in the government of Imperial Japan who, after WWII, experimented on himself to horrific effect.

Lee can next be seen in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Mulan. He previously worked with Stargirl showrunner Geoff Johns on Spike TV’s Blade: The Series. His other credits include recurring roles on HBO’s Oz, Amazon’s Sneaky Pete and ABC’s Ten Days in the Valley. Nelson also co-directed the indie feature A.I. Tales this past year. Lee is represented by TCA and Bohemia Group.

Greg Berlanti, Johns, Sarah Schechter and Melissa Carter are executive producers of Stargirl, which is based on the DC character created by Johns. The series is produced by Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions in association with Warner Bros Television. Showrunner Johns is writing the first episode as well.

The 1999 introduction of the title character was a key early success for Johns as a comic book writer. Stargirl was directly inspired by his sister, who died in a 1996 plane explosion.

The show’s logline: “Stargirl follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore as she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new drama reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in an unpredictable series.”

Brec Bassinger of Nickelodeon’s Bella & the Bulldogs will play the cosmic title character on Stargirl, which s one of the original series offerings that Warner Bros Digital Networks and DC Entertainment are banking on as they launch their ambitious streaming site aimed at superhero fans.

Man, they are going to create a whole generation of fans who will think Liberty Belle and Johnny Quick were JSA members. Or that Starman and Star Spangled Kid were the same guy.

Well, the Johnny Quick/Liberty Belle angle is purely speculation. Based on the description, we get, those could be Kent and Inza Nelson:

More like they're going to create a whole generation of fans who actually know Liberty Belle, Johnny Quick and Sylvester Pemberton are.

Why is Cyborg not with the Titans?

I guess the actual explanation was that he was off limits when they went into pre production with Titans, because they were still trying to give Fetch a solo movie. By the time they started Doom Patrol, the hilarious box office failure of Justice League made them change their mind.

I figured it was mostly due to the show being a bunch of names nobody's ever heard of. Sure we know who characters like Negative Man and Robot Man are, but the average watcher hears the name Elasti-Girl they think of the Incredibles rather than the Doom Patrol character. I think that's also why she's being called Elasti-Woman in this. More people just know Cyborg, I just hope if they're going back to making him a Titan it happens again soon in the comics as well like they retrofitted ginger Wally back into their history.

And as I understood it from older articles regarding Cyborg in DP, him being there was a way to break those characters in as well as provide more depth to Vic's character before joining the more gritty version of Titans later on.

AND OMG DID ANYBODY SEE THE TITANS FINALE POST CREDIT SCENE?!?!?

No, but now that the season is over, chances are the whole run will pop up on German Netflix any day now.

I can't wait for season 2. This series is sort of everything I would want out of a more adult Titans themed comic with members of all age groups similar to some of the 90's iterations of the team.

What I want from a season 2...

* More Donna Troy.

* Proper suits/looks and codenames.

* Jason Todd becoming the Red Hood.

* More info on this universe's Justice League.

* The season ending with some lead-in into a season or spin-off featuring Red Hood and the Outlaws.

Pretty sure they did this in Smallville too when it comes to Starman and Star Spangled Kid. If it comes down to it, it was in his original contract anything done with the characters in Robinson's run of Starman had to be run by him so that takes away a lot of key factors in the Starman legacy. So they gave Sylvester a brown trenchcoat and the staff of Jack Knight with a star spangled t-shirt and called him Starman rather than let him go on to become Skyman.

I'm betting that's exactly the type of iteration we'll get in this Stargirl series. I'm still excited to see a better version of a live action JSA come to life on screen.

James Wan Teases Creatures Coming To DC Universe’s ‘Swamp Thing’
Quote:
While Wan didn’t get specific about which character audiences would see when the show arrives, he did unveil where they would be coming from.

“We’re a big fan of Alan Moore’s take on it so picking a particular story and using that as the foundation to kick it off. If we’re lucky, we can have many other stories to tell.”
Swamp Thing TV Series Will Lean Into Gothic Horror/Romance, Wan Promises
Quote:
We want to lean more into the Gothic horror/romance aspect of it," Wan told CBR, underscoring the influences of the comic book source material.

"It's a human story," the filmmaker said. "Basically, it's Beauty and the Beast. It's about this guy struggling to find his humanity as he's transforming and becoming more and more of a monster."

It would be great if they did the vampire town story, then in a later season revisit that town as a lake like Moore did. I'm hoping to see stuff like that.

‘Stargirl’: Luke Wilson Joins Cast Of DC Universe Series
Quote:
The DC Universe series Stargirl just added some Hollywood star wattage to its cast: Luke Wilson is on board to portray mechanic-turned-superhero Pat Dugan, who pilots Stripe, a hulking 15-foot robot of his own invention.

The star of Old School, Legally Blonde and The Royal Tenebaums joins a cast led by young Brec Bassinger of Nickelodeon’s Bella & the Bulldogs in the title role of a high school student who inherits the cosmic device of a long-gone superhero. Also in the ensemble: Lou Ferrigno Jr. as Rex Tyler/Hourman, Brian Stapf as Ted Grant/Wildcat, Henry Thomas as Charles McNider/Dr Mid-Nite and Anjelika Washington in an undisclosed role.

Showrunner Geoff Johns, who created Stargirl while writing for DC Comics in the late 1990s, described the casting coup in terms that made it sound as if it was written in the stars.

“When I first moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and saw Bottle Rocket, I became a huge fan and admirer of Luke’s,” Johns said “And I literally wrote this part for Luke, hoping that someday and somehow he’d play Pat Dugan. I onlyenvisioned him. And now I feel like I won the lottery! Luke’s talent, humor, compassion — his presence and professionalism — and his creative collaboration, his ideas — we’re so lucky to have him alongside Brec in Stargirl.”

The show’s official description of Wilson’s character: “Pat Dugan once went by the less-than-inspired superhero name of Stripesy, sidekick to a young hero known as the Star-Spangled-Kid and later Starman of the legendary Justice Society of America. Today, Pat has left his sidekick life behind him. But when his new step-daughter, Courtney Whitmore, discovers Pat’s secret past and takes on Starman’s legacy to become Stargirl, Pat is forced to come out of retirement and once again become a sidekick — to his step-daughter — this time piloting a 15-foot robot called Stripe.”

Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter and Melissa Carter are executive producers of Stargirl, which is based on the DC character created by Johns. The series is produced by Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Johns is writing the first episode and will serve as showrunner. No official release date has been announced.

Wilson can also be seen in several upcoming films, among them The Goldfinch, directed by John Crowley and opposite Ansel Elgort and Atom Egoyan’s Guest of Hounour. He also has roles inan all-star anthology feature called Berlin, I Love You with Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley and Mickey Rourke and a ribald comedy called In the Swing of Things.

Wilson is represented by CAA.

Stargirl shares its title with an upcoming Disney+ movie. That production adapts the novel by Jerry Spinelli and stars singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal in the title role of Stargirl Caraway, a non-conforming newcomer who shakes up an Arizona high school campus.
