I suppose if DC is serious about chasing away the last of their older long time readers, this will be the way to do it. DC wont even be a company that makes new comic books 5 years from now.

For a long time it's been stated on the message boards that there's been a power struggle at DC between Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns. The New 52 was said to have been DiDio's idea, and Rebirth was said to have been the brainchild of Johns and a capitulation to the tantrums on the boards.

I think 5G might reflect the demise of Johns and DiDio's gaining a free hand.

I think 5G is going to be looked back on after the death of the comic industry as the last hail mary by DC.

The end is nigh folks.

Does Johns even have any power anymore? Like, even an actual title at DC anymore post- his "stepping down" as WB Pres and CCO?

I'm sure that's how some people felt about DC in the 90's.

Maybe, but the difference being... back then, there actually was a generation of brand new comic readers in the wings to (largely) replace the old.

I hate to say it, but there might be one now, too. Especially if it's feminist heavy, there is a large audience to tap into with another revamping. It needs to be done with care, and can't be over sexualized like the New 52, but it could easily find an audience to replace those of us they may lose.

What are some of examples of comics that are "feminist heavy" being successful these days?

I would also disagree with "large audience". Trannys and girls doing cosplay at cons do not equal buying comic readers. New people just aren't interested in buying and reading comics. At least not in numbers that can sustain the industry. Comics stores are closing every year and the sustainable number of comic shops needed to be open to sustain the industry is approaching danger levels. I dont know what the magic number of stores it is. 1500? 1200? 1000? I honestly cant tell you exactly what it is, but when we get there, we will all know it because Disney or AT&T will pull the plug first, then the other will follow right after.

Digital only for 2 years, then that gets yanked, too. Who's going to read digital comics when you can just watch an animated DC movie? Or anything else?

Raina Telgemeier's latest graphic novel was the best-selling book last month. Not best-selling comic book. Best-selling book.

^Doesn't sound all that different then their attempts to streamline everything in Zero Hour, but this was helpful and I look forward to the second video.
