/\ Ha ha, that's a good line. I'll have to remember that for future insults.

Black Gunn (1972)

"No need to waste good horse."

Man I watch reviews for these Grindhouse movies on Youtube because sometimes they're informative or funny, but I feel like I could do better than half of these except for two problems: I have no technical skills to edit in clips or photos (which the best ones have) and I don't particularly like to be photographed. Still, I know more about these cold than half these cats do (let alone if I researched them, which I would do).

Anyway, this was pretty good for throwing in so many now cliche Blaxploitation tropes (the white gangsters use half the racial slurs out there). The story and action are decent. The cast (besides football player turned "actor" Jim Brown) includes a lot of familiar faces from before and after this time (like Martin Landau and Bruce Glover).

Fun movie, but the soundtrack for some reason irritates me really bad.

I saw this, and it jumped the hell out of me. The story was very obvious/microwav'd, but I'm baffled at the more vehemently negative reviews. It's not often I get actually scared during a movie; I was outright petrified at a couple points during this. Reccomended.

WarCraft (2016)

"I've led thousands of warriors into battle, but I fear being a father. Does that make me a leader, or a coward?"

Led by the sorcerer Gul'dan, the orc race invades the peaceful realm of Azeroth to make a new home for itself. One orc, Durotan, does not trust the sorcerer's death-magic, and plots to kill him and save his people. The humans of Azeroth attempt to defend their homes, but there is more to the invasion than anyone knows.

Honestly, the film is very good. I heard John DeBella and his morning crew yesterday give very harsh reviews, but I do not share those opinions. The film has a good and varied cast, the acting is solid, the visuals are incredible (some of the best damn magic you'll ever see), and the costumes and settings are not all smeared in dirt and depression (meaning you can actually look at them).

I caught a bunch of names aside from Gul'dan and Orgrim Doomhammer, but since this is an examination of how the Horde and the Alliance initially met and became enemies, a lot of the characters escaped me and those I knew of either weren't born yet or didn't play their hands at this story's time. Regardless, you'll find a favorite, as there are a bunch to pick from.

Even though he's the villain, a total bastard you'll come to loathe, Gul'dan really is a top-notch character. He has an intimidating design, some merciless powers, and excellent quotes. What's more, he isn't a pushover. Orcs are much more badass here than in Tolkien's works, more on par with the stuff Games Workshop puts out (though 40k trounces WarCraft by far, of course).

I saw this in 3D, and it was very much worth it.

Thumbs up

The Wolverine (2013)

"You look nice."
"I feel violated."

Have to say - this was pretty decent. This was the first time seeing it; I thought I had all the X-Men movies on dvd, but after reading up on the whole X-Men Cinematic Universe, I found out (to my own embarrassment) I did not own all the movies currently out. So, I needed to remedy that problem, immediately.

Dug the action sequences, loved the setting in Japan, the score was pretty sweet, Hugh Jackman is impressive as always, and his new redhead sidekick was a hoot. But it was really the very last mid-credits scene that did it for me, setting up the DoFP movie, which I really loved when I first saw it.

This movie gets dumped on a lot (not as much as Origins), but I really enjoy it mostly for the reasons you cite.

Hmm, I was bored like hell with Origins and made sure to miss The Wolverine, now I kind of want to watch it (especially given all the fun I'm having catching up with the X-men comics). I'm also considering Last Stand as well.

The X-men movie franchise has been mostly miss for me. I don't like the first two movies...but I LOVE DoFP and FC, and really like Apocalypse. So I'm trying to get the gumption up to watch the two aforementioned.

Well, I'm not actually defending Origins so much as Wolverine, but there are elements of the former I liked.

The Wolverine is the one you've got me interested in. I've heard some pretty good reviews from other fans as well. Still not sure on Last Stand though.

Oh, and thanks for the input!

I don't get why anyone who likes the X-Men would dislike this movie, I loved it

It's actually one of the only two X-flicks (Deadpool is the other) I own

Branded (2012)

"This whole country is just like one Hollywood back lot, f***ing, facade. And it's a really s***ty made one, at that."

A very clever indie flick and satire on advertising and consumerism.

Glad to hear it. I don't get it either, but I hear a lot of "meh" and some real disdain for that movie.

Oh god, I remember Bob Chipman's review of Branded. He hated that film. I didn't care then and don't now, because it just doesn't interest me, but after seeing his video a while back, I couldn't see how anyone could enjoy it.

After weeks of waiting, I finally saw Apocalypse, and surprisingly I actually found much to enjoy about it, even If I do acknowledge, it's all over the place, especially in the first half. As per usual, I wasn't a fan of the wasted mutants, though, especially Storm, and Psylocke, both of whom get the short-end of the stick again. Mystique wasn't featured as much as I feared she would, although near the end when everyone was saying how great Mystique was, it did feel like it was too much of a love letter to Jennifer Lawrence.

Fassbender and McAvoy was great as usual. Disapointingly though, Apocalypse felt way too generic, even if Oscar Isaac was really great in the film.

Well, truthfully, "very clever" was probably a stretch and I don't want to buy it or anything, but I still enjoyed it. Do you remember the main criticism? I could see charging it with being heavy handed or pretentious and maybe saying the main character is not all that relatable/likable, but it's not distasteful or amateurish. I'd characterize it as what I imagine Mad Men is about (never actually watched it) mashed with Super Size Me in a surreal Russian context.

I can't recall everything Chipman said, but it included:

1) Protag being touted as a brilliant new marketing expert, but at no point does he really come across as especially smart; he barely passes as average

2) The plot is explained in a ham-fisted way or some such, Micheal Caine ends up looking like a far less cultured actor

3) The plot is basically a crappy fat-shaming-via-fat-is-beautiful evil marketing ploy

4) Something about how obnoxious the visuals were

You can probably find his review online. I saw it on The Escapist site, where he has the staff account "MovieBob". Of course, this was a good while ago, so I don't know if he left and his submissions were all taken down.
