It's probably too late to help her, but that article even mentions that she's insane. I mean 900 trillion dollars. No sane person would sue for that much (let alone think they can get away it). She needs to be in a place, with people exactly like her, even if she doesn't want to. With the way things are going, her kids are probably going to grow up to be nutjobs too.

I've often thought it would make things much more reasonable if, when people decide to sue for some amount of money, it is an all-or-nothing deal. So if you sue for a billion dollars because you slipped on somebody's sidewalk, the court will decide if it is worth A BILLION DOLLARS. If no, then you get nothing. I dislike the idea of being deliberately unreasonable in an attempt to get a high settlement that will seem low only by comparison.

On the other hand, I'm sure somebody could find, without too much trouble, and example of a case where that would be a very bad thing. So perhaps, as ridiculous as that process seems, it may be a necessary evil overall.

A settlement is a negotiation, a ruling on the other hand has no negotiation. A jury typically decides fault and then basis the reward based on guidelines set out a the onset of trial.
