Our puppy just tore my stepdad's wallet, his driver's license, and a number of his cards to bits. In a genuinely shocking twist, the greenbacks he had were unharmed.

He's going to hit the roof when he finds out.

Poachers murdered Kenya's only white female giraffe and her calf. I don't even have the heart to post the damn link, the news is so fucking depressing.

At dinner a short bit ago, my mother told me our older dog is starting to lose her sense of hearing. It's really depressing being told that because I am always giving her verbal compliments to go along with scratches and rubs, because I want her to know how much I care (she's a rescue, she deserves to be praised). She already is starting to move up the stairs slower than usual.

This is a disturbing one from Africa:

Botswana reports mysterious deaths of hundreds of elephants

Quote:
Hundreds of elephants have died mysteriously in Botswana's famed Okavango Delta, according to an official who ruled out poaching as the tusks were found intact.

The landlocked country has the world's largest elephant population, estimated at 130,000. The Delta alone is home to an estimated 15,000 elephants.

"We have had a report of 356 dead elephants in the area north of the Okavango Delta, and we have confirmed 275 so far," Cyril Taolo, acting director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, told AFP news agency in a text message.

He said the cause of the deaths was yet to be established.

"We do not suspect poaching since (the) animals were found with tusks," he said . . .

My cat, Pip, turned 17 today, which I think is a good age for a house cat. I've had her since she was only a few weeks old and I'm fairly certain she's the oldest the family has had so far (though the first two of my life were taken in as feral cats with age unknown).

My family's older dog will have to be put to sleep tomorrow. I came home last night and we could barely get her off the couch, and when we did she fell onto the floor and crawled into her dog bed. The couch was soaked in urine and she can barely walk, won't eat or drink, has been deaf for a while and we are certain she is now blind.

It's only two years since the last time we lost a dog and this girl has to sign off at 14. More than a decade of love after her previous owner abused her and disowned her, but these are terrible circumstances under which we are losing her.

Sad. A close friend recently had almost the exact same situation (old dog with long-standing health problem basically stopped getting around).

My cat is now 17 and has a thyroid problem and I hope so much that she can die peacefully some day without getting worse or having to be put down, but often that's not the compassionate option.

I came home and saw the old girl in her bed. Vet told my parents she had a small stroke that fucked her balance center in her brain and she wasn't eating because of the nausea. She's eating/drinking again, can stumble about, and is in generally better condition and steadily recovering (about a week and she'll be normal again).

This is a huge relief.

Yay! That makes me happy. It also makes me think you have a pretty good vet, to take the time to diagnose that and give you a decent prognosis.
