Q & A with Ethan Van Sciver

Conducted May, 2008

Ron Marz

TheGLC.com : Greetings Ethan

Ethan Van Sciver: I bought a lawnmower today. That's how comic artists roll. My life is very exciting.

TheGLC.com: what kind of mower ?

Ethan Van Sciver: I haven't taken it out of the box yet. It's a Toro, but it's got some extra feature that monitors how fast or slow you want to push it, and it adapts to you.

TheGLC.com:  I wish I could make a living doing what I love, you have a blessed life, Ethan. But You better not be making that wife of yours mow the lawn! Anyway, What is the very next project of yours we can look forward to, Ethan?

Ethan Van Sciver: She actually wants to. She's in the garden all the time. I had to explain to her that it was "men's work". Telling a woman that something is "men's work" is a good way of getting out of doing it, these days. My wife gets very annoyed.

TheGLC.com: Reverse psychology. This is surreal. Here on the BIGGEST Green Lantern fan site on the internet, chatting with EVS about lawnmowers. LOL

Ethan Van Sciver: Anyhow, we don't have to talk about lawnmowers. I'm sorry.

TheGLC.com: I'm sure most folk would be content to talk about toasters with you, if that's what you bring to the table. My wife only gets annoyed when I tell her that 'I'm on it' and then keep coloring in my Superfriends coloring book ...

Ethan Van Sciver: A Superfriends coloring book? That sounds like heaven.

TheGLC.com: You are speaking in riddles. If you say "lawnmower," that's code for something that happens in Blackest Night right?

Ethan Van Sciver: No, the thing I'm working on now has nothing to do with mowing lawns or making toast. It's Geoff Johns at his finest though.

TheGLC.com: Is it Plastic Man?

Ethan Van Sciver: No, it's not Plastic Man. It's a huge blockbuster event that Geoff and I will utterly rock.

TheGLC.com: So did you have fun in Seattle, Ethan?  (at Emerald City Comic Con)

Ethan Van Sciver: I did have fun in Seattle. People came out...lots of Green Lantern fans...and I drew a lot of Sinestro drawings.

The GLC.com: What's up with Sinestro?

Ethan Van Sciver: It's pretty funny that Sinestro, the character that DC editors laughed at me about a few years back, is now the most popular villain DC has.

TheGLC.com: I've read good arguments that basically suggest... Sinestro will PLAY or BE gay if a situation where he stands to gain power by it, but otherwise sex is not on his mind. What do you think?

Ethan Van Sciver: Sinestro could be gay... I don't see why not. But I think he's asexual...far too megalomaniacal to consider anyone or anything other than himself.

TheGLC.com: Ethan, do you have any insider info on a possible GL movie?

Ethan Van Sciver: They came to me about the movie.

TheGLC.com: any info you can pass on about it?

Ethan Van Sciver: Nope!

TheGLC.com: Not even a thumbs up or thumbs down?

Ethan Van Sciver: Thumbs down until they hire Geoff (Johns) to write it.

TheGLC.com: Will we see a GL film in the next decade ?

Ethan Van Sciver: As of now, yes, you'll probably see a GL movie. But it could fall through. You never know.

TheGLC.com: is there anything besides GL or plastic man that you have dreams of working on?

Ethan Van Sciver: Yeah! Everything!

TheGLC.com: Any idea on Keith Champagne's GL Corpse mini? I'm dying to know.

Ethan Van Sciver: I don't know about Green Lantern Corpse. Haven't heard anything about it.

TheGLC.com: Now the big question you guys have been ducking at the panels... it's OK if you don't want to say yet...Will the Blackest Night be a company-wide crossover? Part of me is envisioning Blackest Night possibly being something like Underworld Unleashed was, to some degree... with different issues of, like, Robin, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc., not necessarily connecting directly with the core Blackest Night story, but having tie-ins where dead loved ones come back with Black rings, etc.. Hot or cold?

I mean would BN be like the way Jokers Last laugh crossed over throughout the universe. I don't want to see Batman's parents coming back to life, that'd be fucked up right there.

Ethan Van Sciver: Geoff and I talked about it way back when, saying that it OUGHT to be company wide. But that was just us talking. I know that DC is excited about it, but I don't know anything about what their plans are beyond what Geoff is capable of producing. I hope they DON'T make it company wide, lest it get out of control and lose it's focus. But again, I'm keeping my eyes on my own paper.

TheGLC.com: I hope Ch'p becomes a black lantern, that be badass

Ethan Van Sciver: The new Ch'p, B'dg is awesome. He's a little tough guy.

TheGLC.com: I like B'dg, but Ch'p still holds a place in my heart

Ethan Van Sciver: Mine too.

TheGLC.com: The Orange Lanterns: the thick orange aura/shield around them in the GL #25 splash... you mentioned this was for a reason. Was it to conceal that manta Orange Lantern with the ring collection under its wings, or something else? Also, now that we've seen some of the other corps. Yellow, Violet, Red and Orange. I'm really looking forward to blue and mostly Indigo. Any hints as to when we might see clues when they will be popping up and recruiting?

Ethan Van Sciver: I won't give anything away ever. I don't want to spoil anything. This will be the most wonderful Green Lantern experience you've ever had, and it'd be awful to hurt that in any way. Anyhow, I really have to get to work, goodnight Be good!

TheGLC.com: It's a pleasure, sir.

Ethan Van Sciver: I'm here, on my thread forever, so feel free to stay in touch and ask anything you'd like!
