My DC Entertainment Wishlist: Television

Dear Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns,

I am a dedicated DC Comics fan and pride myself on knowing the useless knowledge of your company's characters. I am writing to you because as the CCO, you handle film, television, animation and interactive with the (Warner Bros.)studio. I would like to give you some suggestions on what would make DC Entertainment...entertaining. So without further ado, let's jump into Television shall we?

The easiest character that translates well into serialized storytelling and still able to create something unique...has got to be Vic Sage aka THE QUESTION. A reporter that dubs as a (faceless!) masked vigilante? SOLD.

Ask Denny O'Neil or Greg Rucka and they'll certainly tell you how deep those stories can go. Bridge the gap between comic audiences and the general public with The Question series. Think of it as Fringe mixed with CSI: with a lot more knuckle busting! And hey, you could even steal William Petersen and cast him as Tot!

Is that not working for you, Geoff? Okay, how's this for (DC) Entertainment....A series of DC Comics property miniseries?! Genius right? Check it out...

on HBO running an hour long and is what everyone is watching after they get their True Blood fix. I'm sure Azzarello would vouch for his series being the new Sopranos or better yet, The Wire, for the network. Don't limit yourself(and the company) there though Geoff, we have to think bigger. Expand to other audiences. Other "DEMO"graphics...

Yes, I believe that the Brian Wood written series, DEMO, would serve as a great hook for younger audiences and still keep the attention of those who want some fine performances. Imagine Showtime network show starring actress Olivia Thirlby leading a cast of other young outstanding talents in a show that feels like (the Emmy nominated show)In Treatment!

DC Comics provides everything we currently have on television but with 10x more potential. And I'm not all about Vertigo, I understand that we have to cater to our youth as well. Children are our future right? So why not give them some quality animation to watch? DC Entertainment needs to go beyond the World's Finest, the upcoming Green Lantern animated series.

I suggest something familiar but impressive. How does waking up on a Saturday morning to watch BILLY BASTON and the MAGIC of SHAZAM!!! Or for short, THE MAGIC of SHAZAM! Its basically Superman with more comedy.

Now normally this is the part where I would pitch you The Question animated series for Cartoon Network and let the Question Mark logo become the next Bat symbol or Superman shield....but instead this is where I pitch a variant of something Cartoon Network already has. They currently air the animated series Ben 10, which is all about aliens and space stuff and even has episodes written by comic creators(Legend Len Wein among them). Why not focus on the "villain" side of things like we often do in comics. Why not let the R.E.B.E.L.S. take charge!

Vril Dox and his team of miscreants would be an instant hit with the same people who grew up watching Batman:TAS and the generation that watched and enjoyed Justice League Unlimited. Some of those best episodes focused on the villains. Give it a shot Geoff. When it comes to cartoons...SPACE not Sex sells.

Well Geoff, those are just a few simple ideas for you to run with. Next time, we should focus completely on DC Entertainment's animation division. See you then!

Question SHAZAM!, and R.E.B.E.L.S., I'm all instantly on-board with. Demo I would like to see, though.

How do you present this stuff to Johns? Does he respond?

I wouldn't mind seeing a Cap'n Marvel series as long as his villains are interesting. Problem is, you can't have Black Adam as the baddie every week.

Mister Atom, Mister Mind, Ibac, Doctor Sivana, Captain NAZI- heck, maybe even a SUPERMAN cameo. Plenty of old school stuff to dig down to.
