Over the Top (1987)

"I drive truck, break arms, and arm wrestle. It's what I love to do. It's what I do best. Being number one is everything. There is no second place. Second sucks."

Got the riff to this recently, but wanted to watch it clean first since I don't think I've done so since the 80s.

The Hooked Generation (1968)

"Que pasa, baby?"

[Rifftrax:] Over the Top (1987/2007)

"He seems to be wrestling Fyodor Dostoyevsky."

[Rifftrax:] Invasion of the Bee Girls (1973/2020)

"I've seen Lego men less squarely built than him."

[Rifftrax:] To Catch a Yeti (1995/2015)

"At some point someone said, 'Meatloaf, we have the perfect movie for you.'"

Tromeo and Juliet (1996)

"Parting is such sweet sorrow.
-Yeah, it totally sucks."

The Killer Elite (1975)

"You all look alike, you young mercenaries. No matter what country.
-Well we're all idealists. Y'think we do it for the money?"

A Sam Peckinpah movie I hadn't seen before but was able to from Tubi. Follows two high-level mercenaries (Jame Caan and Robert Duvall) in a San Francisco company the CIA employs and who end up on opposing sides when an Asian revolutionary arrives in the States. Very good.

Ghost Story (1981)

"I will take you places you've never been. I will show you things that you have never seen and I will see the life run out of you."

Me too. I was kind of disappointed that this Rifftrax didn’t have the audio file option (it was a video file only) because I own it on DVD. It’s so bizarre, but fun.

MST3K: Space Mutiny (1988)

"It was really nice of them to give that dead girl another chance."

Last week's Future War was a complete waste, but this more than made up for it. Film was absolutely hysterical even without the jokes (absurd outfits, weak plot, overacting, scenery-chewing villain, etc), but me and my dad had a blast with it. He totally lost his shit when the gang made this joke about a character who had just been killed off apparently still being in the film, calling it the worst editing he'd ever seen and laughing himself hoarse.

And then again when the main villain decided to attempt futuristic dental torture on the love interest. "What's the bad guy gonna do? I know! He's gonna shoot lasers at her teeth!"

He also recognized Cameron Mitchell and a couple other names, while I recognized Reb Brown (who, despite his poor luck as Captain America, actually was a decent actor and an early edition of Chris Evans).

I shamelessly admit I have a soft spot for the costumes, '80s spandex in all its glory.

I was mildly surprised my dad didn't back out of the video as the gang was sitting through the credits, but even he wanted to see how Pearl would escape (it was worth it to see Bobo caused Rome to burn).

Part of me wants a remake of this, like with Battlestar Galactica (which my dad promptly showed me clips of because of how the ships and costumes either resembled or outright had to be from the old show and recycled for the film).

Die You Zombie Bastards! (2005)

Do you know what I love?
-Rubber d**ks?
Well yes, but that's not what I was going to say."

Did not like (except for an occasional joke or kill). They could've cut 20 penis jokes and still had too many.

Inherent Vice (2014)

"And to drink, gentleman? You're going to want to get good and f***ed up before this meal!"

The Psychedelic Priest (1971)

"Is that how I sound to them?"

Halfway through the Grefe collection. This was an extremely low-budget, but pretty-good flick in CA instead of FL. It follows a priest whose soda is spiked with LSD leading him to question his faith and take a road trip.

Yeah, I think I saw that sans riffs and the MST3K version too. They also went back to it as Rifftax.

Rifftax? So now Mike and the Bots are taxing viewers to support their giga-mansions?

Man, this is why Joel was a better host!

[Rifftrax Live:] The Giant Spider Invasion (1975/2019)

"Folks, this is the most accurate depiction of Wisconsin ever captured on film."

Platoon (1986)

"Hell is the impossibility of reason."

Cheeky [aka Tra(sgre)dire] (2000)

"The scent of Venice."

Guess I can’t fix it now. LOL. Maybe it was a Freudian slip because I’ve bought stuff there and had the sale taxes added (though I think that’s only for the physical media IIRC).

MST3K: Agent of H.A.R.M. (1966)

"I've already got abandonment issues from this movie."

In yet another of the countless Bond wannabes, a special agent must protect a doctor from Soviet villains attempting to weaponize a spore that dissolves flesh into fungus. He must do so while wearing a cardigan sweater.

The title of the film makes me wish it was a satirical piece from the perspective of the bad guys, who almost get the job done each time but fumble an important detail that hilariously allows the otherwise-inept hero to defeat them. Would have worked MUCH better as a plot.

Film hits the expected Bond cliches without realizing it isn't doing much to make them digestible to the audience. Honestly just reinforces the pitch I made above being a better idea.

I do admit the villain was a decent actor, aside from looking like Sam Neil stole Peewee Herman's clothes and decided to ransom the entire world.

Best part of the episode was the parody of the Scopes trial with Mike being put on the chopping block for blowing up a bunch of planets. The whole segment with Brain Guy and the pies was solid gold.

I Vitelloni (1953)

"He who cares not for art, cares not for life."

The third in my Fellini box set, but I had never seen this one before. Follows a group of young men with little to no direction and particularly one of them forced into marriage because of a surprise pregnancy.

Dog Soldiers (2002)

"There is no Spoon."

My lycanthropic pick for this month's snow moon.

They Live (1988)

"There's gonna be hell to pay 'cause I ain't daddy's little boy no more."

Wanted to watch again in conjunction with the pre-ordered NECA figure finally coming in.

Are you also going to reenact the Never-Ending Fight scene with your dolls?

In Country (2014)

"Some people shoot heroin. I go to war."

A pretty interesting documentary about an Oregon-based group of Vietnam war recreationists. They have more legitimacy than you might expect since one participant was an ARVN vet and their advisor is am American Army vet from that war. In addition, at least two were recent war vets (one re-ups in Afghanistan and the film explores both of their experiences also intercutting with period coverage of 'Nam).

A Bond Unbroken (2017)

"Minh was one of us and we left him behind."

A group of Navy Seals vets seek the Vietnamese interpreter who helped them but was left behind in the pull out. Pretty good.

Ha. I actually was about to post that there is no Frank (Keith David) figure, but it turns out I'm wrong. There was a limited-edition figure, which I did not get and which is now quite expensive. I have pre-ordered, however, the alien two pack.

I've probably posted before that Carpenter meant for that fight to rival the fist-fight finale of The Quiet Man. IIRC David has also said that Piper basically choreographed the whole fight (for obvious reasons).

MST3K: The Pumaman (1980)

"You will drop your pants to your ankles and walk through town yelling 'I am a ninny!'"

This really felt like it was supposed to be a TV series and not a feature-length film. For Donald Pleasence, this is Jaws: The Revenge, a paycheck film and nothing more.

Honestly, this could have worked as a parody of absurd superhero flicks, with the "Aztec" character being the only actual smart person who basically is the audience voicing their common sense in a film full of imbeciles. But that would require a measure of self-awareness on the writers' part and that was never going to happen.

Oh well, at least me and dad watched a whole bunch of Knowing Brothers episodes.

Dick Tracy (1990)

"No grief for Lips?
-I'm wearing black underwear."

The Irishman (2019)

"Whenever anybody says they're a little concerned, they're very concerned."

Finally saw this. Liked it, but it felt like a lesser (and somewhat self-indulgent) Scorcese flick.

MST3K: Prince of Space (1959)

"Walter Mondale arrives!"

"The Pagoda of the Damned."

A scientist is targeted by evil aliens who want his rocket formula to rule the universe. Thwarting their ambitions is the titular hero, who is impervious to all of their weapons but dodges them anyway. There are also annoying children.

My dad had a couple good laughs out of this, I had more. We got to see how Pearl and Company ended up in Roman times. The hooked noses the bad guys had were almost as irritating as the kids. Dad swears as bad as this was, it was better than Invasion of the Neptune Men. Not sure I want to find out.

Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)

"Ted, we have a destiny to fulfill. Think about our fans, dude!
-Bob and Wendy will totally understand."

Liked this more than I expected despite the retcon. I did like that they kept the wives and Bill and Ted are just as clueless but lovable as ever. I also liked how their daughters were uber fans and musicheads.

The Music Man (1962)

"Oh, my dear little librarian. You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you've collected nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays."

My folks wanted to see this film again after we played the soundtrack (which I bought as a $5 CD the day before) on a car trip yesterday. I'm pretty selective about musicals (gotten more into them in the last five or so years), but this is one of the ones I really like and I had it in my DVD collection to oblige them.

Man, you two are really on a Mistie kick. I watch one MST3K or (more often because I haven't seen them as much) Rifftrax a week. I actually set that rule because I found I was watching too many and limiting to once a week (with occasional exceptions for shorts, compilation shows, or views with family) prevented me spending all my movie watching on riffs alone.

Straight Outta Compton (2015)

"I got somethin' to say."

I do not like rap, but I wanted to see this anyway and liked it.

The Invisible Man (2020)

"Surprise."

Nice spin on the old story.

A Saint Patrick's Day Double Feature:

Hidden Agenda (1990)

"You know Ireland can be a wonderful place if it wasn't for the Irish!"

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009)

"John Wayne died with five pounds of undigested red meat in his a$$. Now that's a man! Real men hide their feelings. Why?
-Because it's none of your f**kin' business!
Men do not cry."

Dumbo (2019)

"Is that a monkey in your desk?
-Just for emergencies."

Again, alright, but seemed unnecessary. I guess it has the bonus of skipping the stereotype crows.

Eye of the Tiger (1986)

"You made a big mistake, Matthews. Never scratch dry sh*t!"

R.I.P. Yaphet Kotto. A standard/fun-enough revenge flick.

MST3K: It Lives By Night (1974)

"Bats are without sin."

This is very in-line with Track of the Moon Beast, and definitely less entertaining (and frankly less thought-out) than Laserblast. For the most part it's pretty bland and boring and reliant on cliched film techniques, which give me the impression it could have been a cash-in for a werewolf flick in the 1940s or '50s, but here it's just painfully dated.

Some good jokes that even my dad got a kick out of (such as the quoted line) even if they didn't make sense every time, but the best part is we got to watch Red Skelton clips and Johnny Carson interview Jonathan Winters (dude was hilarious).

I need to try and fit Mighty Jack in tomorrow so I can watch the Netflix DVD and mail it back already and stop torturing my dad with Mike and the Bots.
