I had to be clean shaven for work for 4 years. It was a 100 year old company tradition.

Now I've had some form of facial hair for the last 5 years. Primarily a goatee.

The struggle is real. The only time I grow any lengthy facial hair is when I'm going on vacation. I work in a law office, so while no one ever said I have to stay clean shaven, it almost seems like an unwritten rule to "conform to the code", and only the elder partners have beards or any facial hair. None of the younger associates have facial hair. I feel that if I grow any type of facial hair, I'll appear rebellious or militant, and that's not the image to project when you're one of the few minorities working for the company.

I'm clean shaven at the moment, but that's mostly to keep the peace at the house. The old lady hates facial hair and well, happy wife, happy life.

But I often DO have facial hair. I can grow a full beard in about 4 weeks. I used to have really blonde hair but as I've gotten older my hair turned a light brown so I can pull it off if I want to. My brother and dad can't because they don't grow enough hair to connect the moustache to the beard area near their mouth, but I didn't get that. I either have a full beard or goatee. I never ever have just a moustache. The only white guys that look alright with that are cops and firefighters. Everyone else looks like a gay porn star.

How about if you grew an afro and flashed the Black Power sign each morning? Because that would be pretty cool. I mean I could dig it.

Years ago, I worked for a firm that had a Black dude working in the IT department. He had a gigantic afro like Questlove from the Roots. Well, one Monday, he came in with cornrows, and someone must have said something to him because the very next day, he had the afro again. I asked him, "What happened to the rows, man?" He replied with a whisper, "Too ethnic."

MAN I wanted a beard so bad back then. Eventually I managed to get one, actually not too bad coverage. Ironically about a year later I decided I preferred looking clean shaven, at least for now and now it's a fight to get rid of any stubble, whilst back then it was a fight to get any of it to show up...how times change
