  • Was Geoff Johns being intentionally ironic or subconsciously self critical?

Just couldn't resist tossing in another "What IS Geoff Johns poll"...

    but for serious...

When we were introduced to Larfleeze we were introduced to a foul creature who lived a solitary lifestyle surrounded by rings. Loads and loads of rings. Rings he could never use. Rings that would only serve to satisfy his never ending hunger for more stuff.

Oh by the way... did you hear DC is offering up some new plastic rings when you purchase the Brightest Day tie ins?

    GET EM NOW!!!

Neither is life. Would you like me to move it to another forum as well? Because that is within my power.

          *sigh*

You might as well just delete it.

I could have done that, and would have if Spy Smasher posted it. Would you prefer that?

Quite frankly, I think we have enough "Geoff" threads around. Considering the obscure nature of this one... well you understand.

You should've moved it to a different forum and created a treasure(?) map to it.

What is this thread even about?

I'm missing what you're getting at Naysay.

I'm not sure I understand it any better.

It was supposed to be some kind of commentary on DC putting out all these ridiculous plastic "promo" rings as incentive to purchase more books and more "stuff".

I was rereading Emerald Dawn and some of the Gerard Jones run on Green Lantern and remembering how much I loved the narration and the prose in some of the "older" books and just kind of lamenting the era of "tchotchke" collecting that swept in during the mid 90's what with the ridiculous covers and the comic book trading cards and such... when I saw that DC was releasing the Flash and GL rings with the release of Brightest Day.

This thread is just me being a judgmental dick and looking down my nose at all the kids who can't wait to ad yet another useless piece of plastic to their already astounding collection of useless shit. All the other Geoff Johns threads were questions about Johns.... I guess I was pointing the finger at the fans and trying to create the question....

"Am I a fan of the art/medium.... or am I just a hoarder who found a cool "meme" to obsess over?"

Part of the reason I stopped collecting comics way back in the way back was because I realized I had begun to pay less attention to the stories and more attention to the knick knacks and posters and making sure I had a more "complete" collection.

So yea... I guess this was more about me than anything else. I guess I kind of knew that intuitively and that's probably why one of the options in the poll is "shut up Naysay"....

See, now that's a thread I can get on board with.

The only ring I've gotten is the black one that came with BN #1. It's still sitting on a bookshelf in the bag. That's how much I don't care about it.

I wasn't about to spend extra money on a bunch of books I probably wouldn't read just to get a "free" ring.

So I'm with you on that.

Having survived the early 90's (as a youth) I can understand what you are saying, it was hard to fight the urge to collect every piece of trash published at the time, from Image to Valiant to chromium covers to 5 X-Men covers, it was a whole lot of excessive shit. I had to have eveything image published with a #1 attached to it and even the Valiant comics (remember Bloodshot? Or how about Turok?) I want to agree with you Naysay. All these kids that see the pretty green ring attached to our favorite character, the subsequent other corps and the plastic ring for them, it feels like the early 90's all over agian but it's not the same. These rings are give aways for those lucky enough to get them and it's not taking away from the books we read (whether you like the story or not I know you are still reading them). It's not as decadent as it once was and we now, since we are older and wiser, have a choice on whether we want to pursue the "cool" thing or not. The story is still there for us. And so long as the industry keeps a small percentage of the kids they now "have" well that is better long term for us. Sad thing for them is that they will be us in 15+ years...
