August 12 – The first live action movie based on a comic book you recall watching




Definitely Superman. Even though it came out the year before I was born, I saw it early (probably on HBO). It's possible I saw #2 first (since I was actually alive then), but they're mixed in my early memories.

This had to have been my first as well (I may even have seen it in the theater, since I was 5-6 at the time it came out, and it probably was in theaters again sometime after that, too).

Ditto. However, I don't recall seeing it in a theater even though I was enough to do so as I recall seeing the original Star Wars movie in a theater the year before. I recall watching Superman: The Movie on cable, which just started entering people's homes. After watching this movie I did believe a man could fly.

Yes, I'm that old. I remember a time before basic cable and spinning dials and adjusting "rabbit ears" to tune in UHF channels.

I love when people get famous creators to sign the non-obvious stuff.

Funny thing about that, I was wandering around the convention floor at SDCC years ago, before it was insanely popular, and a random guy walked up to me and said, "Hey! Stan Lee is signing around the corner." It just so happened that Stan Lee was promoting Stripperella. I got to meet him and he signed my #1 issue. Right place, right time, and didn't even wait in line for 5 minutes. Now, a Stan Lee signing is AT LEAST 2 hours off your life.

Add another "X" to the Superman: the Movie camp. I remember seeing it at a drive-in theater with my parents. We drove up in my dad's Grand Prix, paid the admission, drove through a dark, gravelly parking lot to the biggest white screen, got our spot and parked. My dad rolled down the window, grabbed a gigantic, silver speaker with a cable wire from a pole and placed it on the dash. I remember I fell asleep in the back seat towards the end of the movie.

I wonder if there are any drive-in theaters left in the US... Probably not. Today, it would just be a cheap alternative to paying for a Motel.

I was 4 in 1978 when Superman came out and never got to see it in the theater, but it WAS the first theatrical comic book movie I saw. I remember seeing it before I saw Superman II anyway. It didn't change my life or anything, by that time, Star Wars had already stolen my heart, and it was a few more years before Green Lantern stole it back and made me a comic book fan.

I wonder if there are any drive-in theaters left in the US... Probably not. Today, it would just be a cheap alternative to paying for a Motel.

There are THREE drive ins within driving distance to me that I still go to! Jen loves the drive in, and she drags me to them even when I'd rather not see what they are showing, which says a lot considering how often we go to the movies. The drive in is a piece of Americana that is sadly going away or hard for most Americans to get to.

We're going to Maine for vacation and there's a drive in we go to every summer there just because. I plan on going once or twice next week.

August 14 – If you were to write a super hero comic book, would it be a solo hero or a team book?

Solo. The only characters I would ever want to write are The Incredible Hulk or The Punisher. Maybe a good FF book starring the Franklin and Valeria.

This is a really good question and a really tough one. If I had access to my laptop I could re-post pix, but they are in my collection thread. Off the top of my head and in no particular order, I'd say

-My custom-made GL Rebirth light switch
-An original 60s Batman hand puppet (a gift from a friend)
-For some reason, I really like the Kilowog figure that came in Rebirth DC direct line
-The Ame Comi Arisia statue
-Then, it's a toss-up between the Infinite Crisis Slumber Party Harley Quinn or the Wizard World (I think Texas)-exclusive green translucent Hal Jordan in the Rebirth line.
