STORY: The horribly mutilated body of an old girlfriend sets John down a dark and winding path into London's occult scene. Can he track down her killer and lay her ghost to rest before he winds up the same way? The series will start by adapting the simpler Hellblazer stories like 'Haunted' and progress to telling more supernatural stories that Milligan spawned. With Marty overseeing things, the tone of the show will still feel personal and never afraid of pushing boundaries. A show that only HBO could handle.
Episode 1:
A seemingly innocuous mistake by Constantine's paperboy sets John on the trail of a murderer. Flicking through the pages of a tabloid paper mistakenly thrust through his letter box, John is shocked to find the news of an old friend's murder. Isabel Bracknell joins the list of the dead associated with John. Constantine calls in a favour from Watford, a cop on whom John has some dirt. Stopping only to keep an annual engagement with the aging Clarice, who warns him against using Isabel's death as a means to satisfying his need for excitement, John visits the murder scene.
Watford furnishes Constantine with the grisly details behind Isabel's murder. With Watford's horrific words running through his head, John leaves the scene of the crime and heads back onto the streets of London. Lost in thought, Constantine is stunned to spot the woman whose murder scene he has just departed before him.
Episode 2:
Face to face with Isabel's ghost, John realises that she'll be stuck haunting the place where they first met until he solves the mystery behind her murder. Retiring to a local watering hole, Constantine reads through a diary he stole from Isabel's flat during Watford's guided tour. He learns that Isabel had recently befriended another magician - Joshua Wright and John believes him to be responsible for Isabel's murder.
Setting our for revenge, Constantine travels deep into the Camden tube station in search of Map, a powerful magician who's shunned his complicated life in favour of a simple life as a tube worker. John tells him of Isabel's murder and of Joshua Wright, a magician he has marked as a Crowley wannabe. Eager for more information on his prey, John visits a crack using friend and a mage turned electrican with whom he arranges a later meeting.
Things take a turn for the worse when Constantine is stood up and confronted by two thugs who proceed to kick seven shades of shite out of him before warning him off Josh Wright's back.
Episode 3:
Beaten to a pulp by Wright's thugs, Constantine seeks help from Chas. Pausing only to contemplate the use of his crowbar on John's assailants, Chas bundles his beaten friend into his cab along with the contents of Constantine's house. Seeking to recover from his beating, John retreats to The Hotel Holt, in marked contrast to his current abode - the Hotel Holt is very much an uptown establishment. Constantine gleans some small comfort from the fact that Wright's thugs don't follow him.
After a quick visit from the hotel doctor and paying off Chas, Constantine stands alone in his hotel room. John confronts the fear and hate that hangs heavy in the London air and uses it to forge his revenge against his betrayer - Hawkstorm. John sends his spirit out on the night air and threatens Hawkstorm with dire consequences for his actions.
With petty revenge gained, and Josh Wright under the mistaken impression that John's run off with his tail between his legs, Constantine returns to his plan to avenge Isabel's death.
Episode 4:
Constantine ponders his own experiences on London's streets as Josh Wright's thugs take to the Underground in search of Map. Expecting to find a helpless man, Wright's men come face to face with the most powerful man in London and suffer a gruesome end beneath the wheels of a tube train. Back on the street, with the contents of Isabel's journal still fresh in his mind, John tracks down Darren and demands help from the crack using mage.
Pausing for a quick breather before setting the endgame in motion, John retires to a nearby pub and bumps into Haine, an aging Magus looking much the worse for ware. As Haine recounts his experiences in the 'field', John is confronted by Map, who's none to happy about his visit from Wight's thugs.
Josh Wright takes matters into his own hands, tracking down Hawkstorm and blaming him for the death of his men at Map's hands. Hawkstorm leaves the failed mage a mutilated corpse.
Episode 5:
Constantine stalks the streets of London, lost in thought and pondering the ghosts which seem to proliferate throughout his city. On his way to meet Chas, John stumbles across the police cleanup of Hawkstorm's murder by Wright. With his further plans for the dead man now pointless, Constantine steps up his endgame against Wright. Returning to Knightsbridge and the aging Clarice, Constantine is forced to explain his motives to the cynical woman before asking for an introduction to the ghost of Albert, court magician to the Kray twins.
As Josh Wright ponders his next move in the wake of John's recent actions, Constantine's plan swings into motion. Darren unleashes his crack magic, forcing Wright to experience a particularly nasty trip. As he flees his hourse, Josh stumbles in front of Chas's speeding cab and is sent stumbling to the ground. As he struggles against his crack inspired visions, Josh finds himself face to face with the grinning Watford who arrests him for Isabel's murder.
With Josh Wright safely secured by Watford, John Constantine sets about extracting revenge for Isabel's murder.
Tied to a chair in what appears to be a decrepit morgue, Josh receives a beating from Watford before Constantine forces a hit of acid into his throat. John tries to discern the reasons behind Wright's actions but quickly learns that Josh's motivations never stretched beyond his own evil attitude towards the more mundane members of society.
With satisfactory explanations received, Constantine reveals the final part of his plan, getting Watford to manhandle the bound Wright into a mortuary slab with the rotting corpse of Isabel as the acid starts to take effect on him.
As dawn breaks over London, a naked blood stained Josh Wright stumbles through the streets. John returns to the playground haunted by Isabel. It transpires that the death of Wright hasn't sent her on her way so John enlists the aid of Albert to ensure his old girlfriend makes it to whatever passes for the afterlife.
"My name's John Constantine. I'm not the nicest bloke you've ever met. But I do me best."
