  • Final Fantasy XIII ~three games, one number~

As part of the project called Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII, three separate games are due to appear sometime in the latter half of the 2008 gaming year, all holding the coveted title of Final Fantasy... but more than that, they are all numbered with the next in line placement... XIII.

    Final Fantasy XIII
    Final Fantasy Versus XIII
    Final Fantasy Agito XIII

But what do these games really have in common?

Aside from being designed around the same concept of Crystals that lead the world towards the future, these games reportedly do not take place in the same worlds, do not have any of the same characters, and do not crossover in anyway... of course, the details released are so obscure that no one really knows anything about any of the titles, save that two of them will be PS3 exclusives and the other will only be available for mobile phones.

That means there are only two games that really matter... the PS3 titles... and not just because they are PS3 titles, but because, historically, mobile phone games are quickly over looked and forgotten, much like the previous Final Fantasy mobile phone games. The PS3 titles, being the first of the three mentioned, are built on the same engine, so graphically, they will be nearly identical, the difference, from what we have seen, is mostly in the design of each of them

As you can see, FFXIII has a look and feel not unlike FFX and FFXII, while FFvXIII has more of a dark, suppressive look and feel similar to FFVII. One thing that both have in common is that they both look like they could easily be incorporated into the look and feel of FFVIII, but I figure that is beside the point... and the point is actually a question... why the multiple games?

Not that a FF fan like myself is complaining... the more FF games the better, imo... but still... we saw with FFX-2 and FFVII: Dierge of Cerberus that FF games don't really tend to work well in multiple doses... no double dipping... you would think that would be a rule after two such mediocre and overwhelmingly disappointing games (in both fan reaction and sales). But here we are with FFXIII times three. Not only that, but we are also getting yet another game with the FFVII this year, as well... Crisis Core will be the third high profile FFVII game (the fourth game total, if you include the mobile phone FFVII game, Before Crisis), and will be played across PSP screens worldwide, I'm sure, upon its release.

With this triple dip into the most unlucky number, and a fourth into the most over done RPG title of all time, does anyone else think that Square-Enix maybe... just maybe... has lost sight of what used to make Square so great? Ever since Squaresoft merged with Enix, we have been given... different... games that tend to over publicize themselves. FFXII was a brilliant exception, being the greatest FF game since FFVIII... but most everything else they have done... Crystal Chronicles, X-2, all the VII sequels... it jsut seems to me that they have lost their way.

Does anyone else feel this way? Or am I alone on this one?

All of that said... it really comes down to FFXIII and its multiple personalities... I dunno what I think (obviously)... but what do you all think? Will this triple dip be a good idea in the end? Will one of the titles be a breakout star adn the others failures? Or will both PS3 exclusives be huge hits? Or an even better question... if one comes out before the others... do you think the greatness or suckage will inspire or deter gamers from obtaining the later installments?

Seriously... what do you all think of this Crystal Project?

Do good. Be well. Make happy.
Working...
