Viacom has pulled the following networks from Direct Tv Service.
MTV1 and MTV2, CMT, Logo, All the Nickeloden Channels, Spike Tv, Comedy Central, BET, Centric, VH1, VH1 Classics.
This was done when contract negotiations for a fee increase Viacom wanted stalled. Viacom was asking for a 30% increase in rates for their networks. This would equal out to $1 Billion a year on top of their current rates.
Direct Tv has been dilligent in attempting to talk Viacom into either holding current rates or for a much lower increase. Viacom instead decided to be douches. They pulled those networks from Direct TV's services.
Direct Tv attempted to help their customers continue to enjoy their favorite programs from those networks by directing them to Hulu and other sites that carried those shows. Viacom in retaliation pulled their online programming as well preventing anyone from accessing it except though the avenues they have decided is valid.
Now lets look at how this breaks down. If your on cable or satellite a portion of your bill is paid out to these media conglomerates for their networks. Very similar to if you had a subscription to HBO or Showtime. So consider them subscription networks as well. Except they place commercials on their programming. Milking more money from viewers and advertisers. Then they post those shows online, milking even more Ad revenue out of companies.
All we ever hear from these media companies is that their not doing well, their profits are affected by piracy or some other bullshit. #1 every major media outlet last year reported record or near record profits. #2 Viacom has shown the irresponsibility in allowing a single company to control so many networks and how those networks can be consumed.
Anti-Trust laws were built for situations like this. Viacom owns much more than just those networks. I think its time for Viacom and other such media conglomerates to be broken up Ma-Bell style.
Media needs to change not only how its made, but how its distributed and marketed. I don't know if anyone else cares, but in the morning I'm calling my congressmen in DC and asking for a Department Of Justice Anti-Trust investigation in Viacom and all these large media companies like them.
