Anthony Powell, the British costume designer whose decades-long career yielded three Academy Awards, died Sunday at age 85.

“My friend, my mentor, Anthony Powell passed away last evening,” fellow designer Scott Traugott announced on Facebook Monday. We have lost a brilliant designer, a true gentleman. I was so honored to follow in his shadow on many productions. A light has dimmed in our universe. He taught me so much, and helped me so much. I will truly miss him. Everything was told with a very funny Hollywood story.”

Les McKeown, the singer who led the Bay City Rollers in their most successful period, has died aged 65.

His family said that he “died suddenly at home”, and asked for privacy following “the shock of our profound loss”. No cause of death has been announced.

McKeown, who was raised in an Edinburgh tenement block, sang the Scottish group’s UK No 1 Bye Bye Baby as well as Top 10 hits such as Shang-a-Lang and Summerlove Sensation, and led them into a phase of US success in the mid-70s.

An astronaut who flew on one of the most famous space missions of all time has died. Michael Collins, 90, was part of the three-member crew on Apollo 11, the first lunar landing mission in 1969. Unlike Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, he never walked on the moon. Collins stayed behind and piloted the command module as it circled above. Because of that, Collins is often called the 'forgotten astronaut'.

Collins had been battling cancer. In a statement released by his family, "He spent his final days peacefully, with his family by his side. Mike always faced the challenges of life with grace and humility, and faced this, his final challenge in the same way."

NASA Administrator Steve Jurczyk said the nation lost a true pioneer, "NASA mourns the loss of this accomplished pilot and astronaut, a friend of all who seek to push the envelope of human potential. Whether his work was behind the scenes or on full view, his legacy will always be as one of the leaders who took America's first steps into the cosmos. And his spirit will go with us as we venture toward farther horizons."

                    • During the Apollo 11 mission, Collins became the loneliest man in history. When the command module was on the far side of the moon, nobody had ever been that far away from everyone else.

Anita Lane, an Australian singer-songwriter known for collaborating with Nick Cave and the Birthday Party as well as her own recordings, has died at 62.

Cave paid tribute on social media, tweeting, “From her to eternity” — a perhaps inevitable eulogy, given that the song that went by that title was her most famous co-write and one of the most celebrated songs by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
