  • Guy Gardner Warrior-Behind The Tattoos

My latest column for Westfield Comics is up and it. This time it's Guy Gardner: Behind The Vuldarian Tattoos Part One.

All the behind the scenes stuff that YOU wanted to know. (Of course you did....) Click on the link and check it out. Please feel free to leave a comment for me and the good folks at Westfield at the end of the column. They'd love to hear your thoughts and I'll act like I do. (Unless you agree with me , then I'll be all giddy.)

Great article so far, can't wait to read the rest!
It's a damn shame you couldn't keep GUY as the "Indy" adventurer.

Second only to Supes in strength? Oh man how cool would it be to have seen GUY whipping Doomsday's butt, i'm almost certain this would have happened at some stage.

But i have to ask, when will you be getting your hands on GUY again?
I'm sure most of us GUY fans would love to see you show GUY off as the DCU shitkicker that he truly is!

Another question if i may, were you going to persue a closer relationship between GUY and Wonder Woman? ( i'm talking more than just the friendship they had formed during GG: Warrior )

Here's hoping you get to do more GUY stories in the future!

awesome article Beau, and I believe that this

event known as Zero Hour crawled up my butt and pitched a tent.
Should be the standard response from all writers handed a stupid Editorial Mandate!

GLJMT: Sometimes butting heads with editorial/management can be tough. I always try and keep in mind that I am playing with their toys, in their sandbox though. You always hope that they remember that they hired you as a creator to bring your slant on story telling to the table. It's a fine line to walk at times, but when both the editors and the creator are opened minded , it works out really great and is a ton of fun. As a writer, I also look forward to the challenge of having to write under some rules. I think it makes me a better writer.

GUYCORPS: I hope you enjoy part two. I think it'll reveal some fun details of what else went on. At least a small part of it. I had a two year run on the title, and there are more stories to tell. Part of my goal with Guy was as Warrior, was to set him a part from the pack. His fighting styles were going to be based heavy on the MMA/UFC styles that were then just starting to gain popularity (Ten years ago) To this day I don't think that too many writers of action comics really show true fighting styles in comics. I pride myself on writing tough action scenes. I think that it's just as important as the plot. You can't start the truck if there's no engine under the hood. I also had a plan for the relationship of Guy and Wonder Woman. One that I hope I'll still be able to apply at a future date. One that I think will add layers to each of their personalities. Keep your eyes on me and Guy. We may be adding to the bar tab very soon.

I can't recall that last time they were mentioned in a GL issue.

DC wrapped his whole 2 year Vuldarian background up in one GLC issue (early on) in about three panels where they said it was an alien virus and that was about all they said about it.
I guess it was time for them to move on.

So do I. Guy was awesome during that time. Its seems like they've been shitting on him since making him a GL again.

If Johns writes another scene where Guy nearly gets his neck broken and has to be carried around like a child again I'm going to drop the GLS books and send Johns copies of my GG:W collection with a note to Johns attached saying this is how you write a book.

Did we ever get an explanation as to why the ring duplicated itself in Rebirth and Parallax tried to posses Guy at the exact moment his Vuldarian um... "virus"(?) was going kaput?

As far as Editorial Interference, I agree with Geoff Johns take on the matter. If they keep telling you what and how to write something have them take your name off the book and tell them to do it themselves.

After I was off the book, Guy's new continuity became a little muddled to me. I found it harder to keep up with most of it.

Making GUY human again wasn't a bad idea IMO. Honestly, i loved him as a GL, always getting into peoples faces. I really loved what Gerard and Chuck did for GUY, fleshing out his character and origin. But Beau's take is by far my favourite, as we finally started seeing GUY break away from Hal's shadow and become his own man. He was the proverbial man's man. The Vuldarian take on GUY i really enjoyed at the beginning, but as Beau says, suddenly everyone wanted to use GUY and his powers just got ridiculous.

Most importantly GUY finally got rid of the Moe hairdo during Beau's run ( GUY grew up and moved on from being the jackass to the asskicker ). Now if we can just get all the artists who currently draw him to keep it current looking ( Pat's look is the best next to Kevin Maguire's in ICBINTJL).

All the earth GL's need their respective moments to truly shine and be numero uno for a few issues, we all have our favourites and they all deserve the opportunity. What's the worst that could happen? the sales go up!

It's a travesty Beau never wrote the Collateral Damage mini series. This would have been an opportune moment to tie up the whole Vuldarian heritage and see GUY chugging beer and " DOTTIN' THE EYES " .

Who deos Beau Smith think should play Guy Gardener in a movie?

And does he agree that Marky Mark is a TERRIBLE choice?
