I'm a former U.S. Marine, and a big John Stewart fine, but I'm not super excited about the idea.
I've always said John growing up where he did made him plenty tough. He didn't need a military background to make him tougher or cooler.
That said, I ain't losing sleep over the retcon. Adapting the cartoon version of the character can work fine, if they keep a focus on the other aspects that make John unique. He was always a warrior, just more of a philosophical warrior, a thinker - an architect, an intellectual, who will also knock someone out cold if they cross the line.
DC has made the change, let me see how they handle it.
I'll certainly know if they did their research when referencing his time in the Corps....
John Stewart's first exposure to the Corps was a stint in the U.S. Marines, where he was recognized as an amazing sharopshooter. Stewart's brief military career put him through college. He became a distinguished and outspoken architect who will always believe something can be built better.

I can dig that.
Ah. So the plan is to meld the comic origin with the animated stuff.
It could work, as long as it isn't glossed over....
Nice pic of the 8th & I USMC drill team too. I guess they've been using those guys in the latest recruitment drive...

I think that can work too. I like it. They're slowly building him up from the ground up. Cool.
And lundonj, good thing you didn't say "Ex-Marine", woulda been all over you like a fly on poop, LOL.
Heheh. I think that was one of the first things we got drilled into our heads that first week in boot. But it is kind of true, that old saying, "Once a Marine, Always a Marine."
My 'little' bro is still active U.S. Army, he just got back from an Iraq tour. We still have a bit of fun with the service rivalry stuff, but not so much anymore, since the Army and Marines are working together so often these days.
Back to the GL stuff, it will be still be a tad weird if John starts walking around in the comics saying, "Semper Fi."
Nothing wrong as long as we get to see a year one type story to flesh it out more. Looking forward to some more JS action.
Isn't it ironic that the two earth GL's that outrank Hal and John did no military training(or earth based at least that we know of).
GUY and Kyle : Honour Guardsmen!
:On worlds afar or scenes at home, wherever the cause should make me roam, always i vow to fight the good fight, to combat evil with all green lanterns might!:
It doesn't take away from the fundamentals of the character, so it's all good. I don't see it adding anything though. John's still the exact same character he was before and that's all that matters.
