        • I've only seen a few movies where the 3D was worthwhile. Avatar, and the 6th Harry Potter movie. Those are the only two that pop into my mind. Everything else could be 2D and it wouldn't decrease the quality of the movie. Oh, Tron: Legacy as well.

Sometimes I'll drive out of my way to see a movie in regular format just to avoid the lackluster 3D effects. It's kind of about money, but not entirely.

            • I hope 3D is a recurring gimmick that fades away into obscurity like it did in the 80's. While it was great with Avatar, I have no desire to see everything in 3D, especially when it doesn't add anything special. In addition, paying $20 a pop for a ticket is completely out of the question... and then they have the nerve to ask for the glasses back after the flick.

              • i have a sh!tload of 3D glasses (not recycling anything that i paid $3 for ) and out of all of them i can only remember seeing Avatar in 3D (GL to but i'm a GL fan so that doesn't count here)

h@ll i seen HP7 part 2 in 3D because the 2D was sold out can you believe that

Aside from paying an extra $5-$10 dollars for a movie that, for the most part, wasn't shot in 3D and looks like crap. It's a 'technology' that's been out since the 50s and hasn't changed much. It's a fad that the movies hit every 30 years or so and think it'd be cool to make.

Movies shot in 3D can look fine, but for the most part what you get are movies that were shot in 2D and then had the 3D added in during post production. Look at Clash of the Titans, they saw how Avatar cleaned up at the box office and saw it was in 3D and tried to turn Clash of the Titans 3D and failed, miserably.

3D, IMO, doesn't add anything to the cinematic viewing experience. It actually cheapens it in an attempt to make the movie more 'interactive.' You have to sit there for ~2 hours with these awkward, uncomfortable glasses that don't even cover you peripheral so that if anything outside the frame of the glasses moves, it take's you out of the experience.

It's also just a shameless cash grab on the part of the studio. You are paying, at least in the case of the theatres around me, nearly double the price for a 3D film. Then when you are done with the glasses they want you to return them so they can just reuse them so they don't have to spend more money restocking glasses? Disgusting.

3D is probably the worse thing the movies could have started doing. I'm looking at you James Cameron. I appreciate that you filmed in 3D, and that your movie actually had a decent script, even if it was overly contrived and recycled (but that's a discussion for a different thread), but you really started a mess.

Now any hack director with a budget can turn his movie 3D after filming and severely detract from the quality of cinema. Or you have someone like George Lucas (now a hack director) re-re-re-re-releasing Star Wars in 3D because he decided he hasn't milked the franchise enough, yet.

That really got a lot longer than I thought, and I kind of rambled, but to sum it up:

                  Fuck 3D.

Funny comment, after I saw Avatar in 3D, while leaving the theatre some girl behind me said, and I shit you not, "That was awesome! I wish the whole world was in 3D."

Fuck theatres for wanting you to return glasses you bought from them. That's just so the theatre doesn't have to buy more from the distributor and the distributor doesn't have to have more glasses made.

I love the Tron franchise. Love the first movie, and anxiously awaited the sequel. I liked the story of Tron: Legacy and thought it looked great, shot well, nice integration of CGI into the look of the world, etc. Even bought the identity disc packaging that came with the original Tron on blu and 5 different copies of Legacy.

But, when I got to the theatre and bought two tickets and was told it was like $30 I couldn't believe it. No 2D option is bullshit. Especially since everything off the grid was 2D and the grid was 3D.

Fuck them for selling out and being lemmings to 3D rather than making a regular film or coming up with something new and innovative, like Tron did.
