  • Marvel's X-Men ResurrXion: Everything You Need to Know

“ResurrXion is all about embracing the [X-Men’s] original dream of coexisting with humans and fighting together to make a better world. All the books in some way, shape, or form, embrace that idea,” explains Daniel Ketchum, one of the editors overseeing the entire X-Men line up. “We’re going to get back to flights, and tights, and capes, and all the classic X-Men tropes. We very much want to harken back to that era where it’s the most classic iteration of the X-Men.”

One way in which the launch will do this is by leaning into the nostalgia of older series, with titles like X-Men Gold, X-Men Blue, and Generation X.

The other is by featuring new costumes. For Blue, artist Jamie McKelvie is in charge of the designs. For Gold, series artist Ardian Syaf will take the helm. And to welcome the new change, EW has an exclusive first look below at Syaf’s rough sketches as he worked out the final looks of each character’s costume.

“[Syaf] designed all of the costumes to specifically harken back to that classic golden age flavor,” says Ketchum. “They should in some way, feel familiar.

With Marvel launching so many series, EW asked Ketchum and X-Men line editor Mark Paniccia to break down what readers can expect from the rest of the series, as well as X-Men: Prime, a special standalone comic that’s meant to serve as a primer for the X-Men universe going forward. You can look at the exclusive cover reveal below.

      • Now for a lesson in Good and Bad decision making...

        GOOD DECISION

‘Marvel’s Inhumans’: ‘Game Of Thrones’ Alum To Star As Maximus In ABC Series
Game of Thrones alum Iwan Rheon has been cast in a lead role of Maximus in ABC’s live-action series Marvel’s Inhumans.

Marvel’s Inhumans, which has a straight-to-series order for next fall, will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family. In the series, Maximus is a clever and charming Inhuman who is fiercely devoted to the people of Attilan, especially his brother, the King – though he harbors an intense desire to wear the crown himself.

“Iwan’s ability to be charming, roguish and still completely unexpectedly dangerous were all the different sides we needed to bring the character to life,” said Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television and executive producer of Inhumans. “We’re thrilled to have him on board.”

As previously announced, the first two episodes of the ABC series, on which Scott Buck serves as executive producer and showrunner, will premiere exclusively in Imax theaters for a two-week window in September, prior to the network run

“Maximus is a complex character, Buck said. “Likable, charming, tragic and villainous all in the same moment, and I’m very excited to have someone of Iwan’s considerable talent.”

Marvel’s Inhumans, which follows a race of superhumans with diverse and singularly unique powers, were introduced in Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965. Since that time, they have grown in prominence and become some of the most popular and iconic characters in the Marvel Universe.

Marvel’s Inhumans is executive produced by Buck, Loeb and Jim Chory. Roel Reine will direct the first two episodes. The series is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios.

Rheon played Ramsay for four seasons on HBO’s Game of Thrones. His other credits include the role of Ash Weston on Vicious and Simon Bellamy on Misfits. Rheon is repped by UTA, Principal Entertainment LA and Curtis Brown.

        BAD DECISION

Simon Kinberg in Talks to Write and Direct the Next ‘X-Men’ Movie

Over the past few weeks, a lot of rumors have been going around about the next X-Men movie beyond the New Mutants film that director Josh Boone is developing. We’ve covered some of them, including how the follow-up to X-Men: Apocalypse – supposedly titled X-Men: Supernova - might start filming this June and would focus on the Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix storyline, which is a comics arc that fans have been dying to see since Bryan Singer teased it at the end of X2. It basically involves Jean Grey succumbing to her powers and transforming into Dark Phoenix, a malevolent force that brings about Grey’s downfall.

Shortly after posting that story, Sophie Turner, who was introduced as the young Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse, was on a red carpet when she revealed she was “about to start shooting the next X-Men movie,” but with both New Mutants and this Supernova film rumored to be in development, it was unclear what film she was talking about.

Knowing something was happening, I started to reach out to sources to find out if a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse was really in development and who was working on it. While many fans were let down by Apocalypse, the film still went on to make almost $550 million at the worldwide box office. Add to that, I’d argue the X-Men characters are more popular than ever after the success of Deadpool, so it would make sense for Fox to keep churning out the movies—especially after introducing a new young ensemble in Apocalypse.

Which brings us to where we are today.

After talking to multiple sources, I can report that writer/producer Simon Kinberg is looking to make his directorial debut with the next X-Men movie and he’s already written the screenplay. From what I hear, it does focus on the Dark Phoenix storyline and it’s now up to the studio if they’ll use his script and if he’ll get to direct it. At this point, I don’t have any information about casting beyond Sophie Turner.

If for some reason you’re not familiar with Simon Kinberg and his relationship to the X-Men franchise, he’s essentially the Kevin Feige of the X-Men universe at 20th Century Fox. If you look over his IMDb resume, you’ll see he’s either written, produced, or been heavily involved with X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, Deadpool, Logan, Legion, and New Mutants. It’s pretty clear he knows these characters, and more than that, he’s helped keep the franchise moving forward as he’s worked alongside directors like Bryan Singer, Matthew Vaughn, and Tim Miller.

While I think fans have the right to be nervous about someone possibly making their directorial debut with an X-Men movie, I’d point out that Deadpool marked the directorial debut of Tim Miller, and that turned out OK. I’m actually very confident in Kinberg’s ability behind the camera. After all, he’s watched some great filmmakers up close and learned from the best, and he’s been entrenched in this X-Men universe for over a decade now.

But before we start debating Kinberg’s merits as a filmmaker, let me remind everyone what I’m reporting today is where the project currently is as I type these words. Tomorrow Fox could decide they want someone else entirely to helm the next X-Men movie or they could decide they only want to make Deadpool movies in the near future. What I’m reporting is what is accurate today, but as we know when it comes to Hollywood, everything can change in a heartbeat.

        • Loved that kid in Misfits, don't really watch Thrones. I'm excited to see who's cast as Blackagar. Surely Vin Diesel won't continue to push being 'Bolt if it's on tv... but I was never sold on a bald BB anyway.

Iron Fist was the Netflix series I've been waiting for the most. I'm gonna be bummed if he doesn't wear the mask and DD is the only one who gets an actual suit. It looked for a few scenes like he'd cover up with a scarf but they already did that with Elektra...

            • Bryan Singer’s ‘X-Men’ TV Pilot Lands Jamie Chung as a Familiar Marvel Movie Mutant
Another X-Men character has been cast in Fox’s Marvel pilot from Matt Nix and Bryan Singer.

Jamie Chung will star as Blink, the popular character from the comics with the power of teleportation, Variety has learned.

The untitled action-adventure series is a hot project at Fox with A-listers behind the scenes. Nix penned the pilot and will serve as executive producer with Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb, Jim Chory and Bryan Singer, who is on board to direct the pilot.

The pilot from 20th Century Fox TV and Marvel Television will focus on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

Chung’s character Blink — real name Clarice Fong — is described as sarcastic, lively and a bit of a tomboy. Her naturally strong exuberance has taken a hit after a sudden and traumatic upheaval of her life. As she adjusts to the new people and places that are suddenly “home,” she is slowly becoming herself again.

Chung is the second series regular to sign onto the pilot. She joins Blair Redford (“Switched At Birth”) who will play another mutant, Sam, the strong-headed leader of the underground network. A slew of other superhero characters are currently in the process of being cast.

Should the pilot be greenlit to series, the show would mark Chung’s biggest broadcast project yet. She was a regular on NBC’s short-lived drama “Believe,” though the series was canceled after one season. She recently appeared on another superhero-based series at Fox with a recurring role on “Gotham.” She also played Mulan in an ongoing part on ABC’s “Once Upon A Time,” and will recur on Hulu’s upcoming season of “Casual.” Chung rose to fame as a contestant on “Real World” and is credited with becoming one of the most successful alums of the MTV reality show.

              • Drew Goddard Is Working on the ‘Deadpool 2’ Script

Some movies are easy to make. Some are way too hard. After the success of Deadpool, you’d have thought Fox would have done what a lot of studios do and just announced a release date for the sequel even if they didn’t have a finished script, or an idea of where the Deadpool movie franchise would end up.

                Thankfully, that didn’t happen.

Unlike so many studios that announce sequels far too soon and with no idea what will happen, Fox has done the polar opposite by not saying a word about Deadpool 2. Sure we’ve heard rumors about casting and the fans have been vocal about who should play Cable and Domino, but as far as official announcements from the studio, it’s been pretty much silent aside from learning that John Wick co-director David Leitch was taking over directing duties from Tim Miller. While development has been ongoing, we still don’t know when Deadpool 2 will hit theaters even though production is aiming to start filming this summer.

Which brings us to the hold up: the screenplay.

Over the past few months, the original Deadpool writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, have been hard at work trying to craft the sequel. They even gave me an update about it in the middle of last month which you can watch here. And while I’m not entirely sure how far they got into the script, I do know at this moment they’re not on it and someone new has taken over: Drew Goddard.

From what I’m hearing, Ryan Reynolds and Goddard have been bunkered down, working on the script together, trying to cross the finish line and create something everyone is excited to make.

While some of you might be nervous about Drew Goddard…let me stop you right now. He’s a fantastic screenwriter that absolutely loves comic books and knows the characters as much as the fans. Look at his IMDb resume. Not only did he direct The Cabin the Woods and co-write the script with Joss Whedon, he was the one that brought Daredevil to life on Netflix, wrote The Martian for Ridley Scott, wrote Cloverfield for Matt Reeves, and was lined up to direct a Sinister Six movie at Sony before the studio rebooted the Spider-Man franchise anew. This doesn’t include any of the script doctoring he’s done over the past few years (see: World War Z). Trust me, he’s someone you want working on any movie or TV show because he’s an incredibly smart writer.

With Goddard and Reynolds currently working on the script, I’d like to think we’re going to hear about a release date for Deadpool 2 pretty soon. Let me know what you think about Goddard writing the Deadpool sequel in the comments below. More when I hear it.

                • Joe Carnahan Is Writing the ‘X-Force’ Screenplay

I think Joe Carnahan may be cloning himself. The Smokin’ Aces and The Grey writer/director is hard at work on a whole lot of high-profile projects right now. He’s readying Bad Boys 3 to direct, he’s working on his recently announced The Raid remake with Frank Grillo, and he’s scripting Shawn Levy‘s Uncharted movie. Now, we can add another big one to the pile. We’ve learned that Carnahan is currently writing the script for 20th Century Fox’s X-Force movie.

If you’re unfamiliar with X-Force, the Marvel comic series follows a team of mutants, a bit more militaristic and rougher around the edges than the X-Men, who take on the less savory wet works and black ops jobs. Like the X-Men, X-Force has featured a revolving team of heroes over the decades, but two of the most prominent figures are Cable and Domino, both of whom are set to appear first in Deadpool 2.

After the unforeseen catch-fire success of Deadpool, and if the early reviews for Logan are any indication, Fox is on a hot streak with their R-rated superhero fare and Carnahan’s tone is a natural match for that grittier spin on the pop genre. His resume is full of action-oriented films that run the gamut from blisteringly bleak (The Grey) to high-octane absurdity (Smokin’ Aces). Speaking of which, Aces gives Carnahan an in with Ryan Reynolds who has proven a formative figure in the new direction of the X-franchise after doggedly shepherding Deadpool to the screen.

As of now, Carnahan is only writing the script for X-Force and is not currently attached to direct, but should Fox be a fan of the script (and if one of his clones has time in their schedule), he certainly has the experience to back a directorial gig.

In addition to X-Force and Deadpool 2, the studio is also developing Josh Boone‘s (The Fault in Our Stars) New Mutants, which is reportedly a YA-spin on the mutant-verse, and the mysterious X-Men 7. Details are being kept tightly under wraps on the Apocalypse follow-up, but we recently learned that long-time X-Men writer and producer Simon Kinberg is looking to make his directorial debut with the project, which is supposedly titled X-Men: Supernova - and would focus on the Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix storyline. Sophie Turner recently revealed she’s “about to start shooting the next X-Men movie,” so more resolute details are likely just around the corner.

                      • FOX ‘X-Men’ TV Series Sets ‘True Blood’ Alum Stephen Moyer to Lead

Stephen Moyer, star of one of the top genre drama series of the past decade, HBO’s True Blood, has been tapped to play the lead in Fox’s Marvel action-adventure pilot.

Written by Matt Nix and directed by Bryan Singer, the pilot focuses on two ordinary parents who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive. Moyer will play the dad, Reed, an ambitious attorney trying to balance the demands of his job at the DA’s office with his responsibilities to his family. He joins previously cast Blair Redford and Jamie Chung.

Nix, Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory executive produce the project, which features characters from the X-Men comic book franchise, for 20th TV and Marvel Television.

The Marvel pilot extends Moyer’s relationship with Fox and 20th TV after co-starring in their upcoming limited series Shots Fired. Following his seven-year run on HBO’s vampire drama True Blood, Moyer co-starred on the Kurt Sutter FX period drama series The Bastard Executioner. Moyer, who just wrapped his first feature as a director, The Parting Glass, is repped by WME, manager Lena Roklin at Luber Roklin Entertainment, attorney Dave Feldman and UK’s United.

                              • Fox’s X-Men Pilot Adds Incorporated’s Sean Teale as Mutant Character

Sean Teale, star of the Syfy series Incorporated, has been cast in a lead role opposite Stephen Moyer in Fox’s Marvel action-adventure pilot.

Written by Matt Nix and directed by Bryan Singer, the pilot focuses on two ordinary parents — the dad played by Moyer — who discover their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

Teale will play Marcos Diaz/Eclipse. A natural rebel compelled by circumstances to cooperate with others, Marcos is a passionate and strong-willed fighter who sometimes lets his emotions overrule reason. His alter ego, Eclipse, who possesses the ability to absorb and manipulate photons, is a newly created mutant for this expanded X-Men universe. Teale also joins previously cast Blair Redford and Jamie Chung.

Nix, Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory executive produce the project for 20th TV and Marvel Television.

Sean Teale, a London native, recently played the lead in the SyFy series Incorporated, produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, which ran for one season. He also played Conde on Season 2 of The CW’s Reign and Franco on the second season of ITV/PBS’ Mr. Selfridge. Teale, who got his start on the British series Skins, is repped by WME, Circle of Confusion and Waring + McKenna.
