I actually don't know of ANY character that physically wears their costume over their civilian clothes. Superman and in the 80's Batman wears the suit under the civies, but not over. They all change into their spandex.
In regards to GL, I don't feel as tho the skin-tight suit is virtually over the clothes. But I do think the ring does something to them. Maybe stores them inside the ring like Kilowog did with his entire race's life force.

I'm going to throw this out there. The Symbiote for example for both Venom and Spider-Man used to camofluage itself as civilian clothes. Not only in look but any color it wanted. Since the suit itself is a construct in green, white and black traditionally, in any form and/or look could it be once the wearer accepts the ring that they could just keep the ring and have it construct their civilian clothes no matter how complex and that's why when it gets torn and ripped you see skin underneath? Doesn't explain Flash or any other hero but for the GLs its plausable...

I'll propose that perhaps the civies get zapped into the ring. We've seen things concealed inside the ring all the time. No reason why they can't do that with their normal clothes.

Originally Hal's costume was a real fabric costume that he took off the dead body of Abin Sur and wore under his clothes like every other super hero. This lasted a remarkably long time until it, finally, became the ring construct we all know and love.

While no definitive answer has been givin I always figured Hal's ring either stores his civillian clothes or changes them into the costume he wears.

I always figured it put the clothes in an alternate dimensional pocket or whatever, like the power batteries.

Heres a sideball to the question of the clothes.

The suit is a contruct of will power by the user. Why is it that when the user is knocked unconciously then are they not naked?

If its like the rings protection shield which is automatic then it's kinda silly the ring would use stored energy to keep clothes running.

Also if it is like the shield then when the energy slowly begins to fail while unconsious would it then cancel the clothes to conserve the energy shield?

Either way the guardians sure put alot of thought into clothes lol.

I figured Willpower was a sub-Conscious thing that woudnt be bothered by being knocked out.

the constructs are also but those go away when knocked out.

Emotions arn't subconsious you don't feel angry when your passed out and such.

hmm.. Then the costumes stay on due to the power of the Comics Code Authority.

The "costume" that a Green Lantern wears is a UNIFORM.

It would serve a purpose even if the wearer were rendered unconscious.

i dont think it would matter just because you are knocked out i think the brain processes are still running so their for their will would still be there
