        • I wouldn't be surprised if they go the phenomenally stupid route and make him Blue

He's been around that much longer. In fact the serious 2004 origin comic that DC put out of him by Joe Kelly, wasn't bad at all.

              • They'll probably make him something crazy like a Red Lantern, or maybe finally he'll become a Star Sapphire (nah!).

                  Sounds about right.

Updated the solicits post with Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern #2 and Star Trek/Green Lantern #4. Threw the variants in there too since I didn't feel like making another post.

He'll be better off Ion. Don't get conned by these uber upgrades. They do nothing to help the character.

                        • If he'd went blue four or five years ago it might've been cool before becoming the White Lantern. Now though it just seems like a downgrade. Make him Green again.

                          • I think Kyle Rayner lost about 60% of his usefulness as a character when Green Lantern: Rebirth happened, and about 30% of it before that because his character arc had basically finished and the writers weren't doing anything notable with him (he still has maybe about 10% usefulness left). He had lived up to the Green Lantern namesake, was a competent hero, and a luminary in the Justice League, and his love life with Jade was more or less stable, until the writers decided to destabilize it for drama. He fully completed his arc when he brought about the return of the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps.

After that... well... everything else has just been worthlessly spinning wheels and trying to find something for him to do that will not somehow conflict with Hal Jordan. The situation is made even worse for him by the way the powers that be structured the status quo. With moving the focus back to Hal Jordan, there really hasn't been much place for Kyle Rayner, at least not that any of the writers have been able to find. Sure it sounds good on paper, "We can have everyone!" but I think it's being naive and overly idealistic to think you can do that and some of those characters won't suffer. Hal Jordan gets the choice cuts and everyone else is left with whatever scraps are left. And there aren't many scraps and A LOT of characters after them. I'm sure you're getting ready to tell me that Jessica and Simon are in the Justice League, but that likely won't last for a very long time, and it's still basically Hal Jordan who appears in the Justice League in other media.

My personal suggestion given this situation (again, not that anyone cares or would follow it) is to leave the character (Kyle Rayner) alone. If you really have nothing to say with him, and nothing interesting to do that isn't dumb, and your editors handicap him by making it so he can only go so far in the current status quo (he will likely never be the prime focus like he was in the '90s), just leave him alone. Sure, you will get regular cries of "Where's Kyle Rayner!?" Ignore them. I believe in shelving characters if there is really nothing to say with them in the current status quo. I think that is better than continuously throwing random crap at the wall with them and watching none of it stick. That's just damaging to the character and its credibility. Who knows, maybe somewhere down the line the time will be right to pull the character out again for a triumphant return or massive status quo shakeup, in which he can actually shine, instead of being Stooge #4 or 5, and a different hero name, power set, and costume every 2 years or so.

So, in short, I think DC does stuff with Kyle Rayner because they feel they have an obligation to use him, but they really have nothing to say with him in this status quo.

All that said, I don't know what DC has in store for Kyle Rayner, but given the track record, it's probably nothing that is particularly interesting for the character.

                            • I agree that it is often better to just not use a character for a while if you don't know what to do with them. Not doing so is how characters end up in armored costumes, changing names and powers, and being given something to do that a more competent writer has to undo later on. Kyle at least deserves better than what he's getting.

And Ion, shouldn't you be campaigning for Kyle to trade his ring for the Phantom Lantern ring? Uuuuuubeeeerrr upgrade!!!!
