I've tried to upload an avatar from my computer. The file (tif) does fit within the size parameters, but I just keep getting a "not a valid image file" message. Uploading from imageshack didn't work either.

If its no larger than 120x150 and not more than 190kb, then try opening the tif in MSpaint or Photoshop and saving it as a bmp or jpg.
Try hovering your cursor over the image, sometimes they are bigger than some programs will tell you (I notice that happens quite often with Photoshop). Or tif files may just not be compatible, which is why changing it would fix this.Do good. Be well. Make happy.

In any case, try to convert your image file to .JPG or .GIF and then try to re-upload it -- I'm not certain .TIF is supported.
Let me know if this works.

I've tried these things, and I STILL can't get an avatar up there!
I can post one of those little things at the bottom near my quote, and I can post a pic in the body of my post, but I can't get a little pic in the corner by my name goddamnit! I just want to put a pic of Hal or a GL cover there, but everything says "invalid url".
Other than that, I'm done decorating. Can anyone help?

Probably some issue of dimension, file size, or file type.
