  • Super-Con/BIG WOW! ComicFest 2011: San Jose, CA. May 21 & 22

I just might check this out since the show was absent for a year.

    Super-Con is now...
    BIG WOW! ComicFest

Many changes are on hand for this years show, and first is our new name. We have been "Super-Con" for over 30 years, and now that a Florida company has decided to use the name for an entertainment show, we have decided to change our name to stop the growing confusion. From now on we will be... "BIG WOW! ComicFest".

Why "Big Wow!"?, you may ask. It is a well established name for one of our senior partners in representing some of the Best Comic and Fantasy Artist in the Industry. And it is a great name for a show... "Big Wow!"... catchy.

Why "Festival"? We consider this show a Celebration of Comics and Art, so we want you, the Fans, to come to the show and "Experience" the fun and enjoy all things "Comics". A Festival of fun will be had at "BIG WOW! ComicFest".

    BIG WOW! ComicFest
    is Moving
    ... About 100 Yards
Starting with the 2011 show, we are moving out of the tent, and moving Upstairs, into the main convention center floor.

What does this mean for the show, you may ask.
    It means...
    *More Floor Space
*Separate Panel Rooms, and more of them
    *Saturday Night Programing
    *Central Air Conditioning
    *More Artist Tables
    *A Bigger and Better Show

55,000 square feet of Comic Book fun.

I've been tempted to go in the past just to check it out. It obviously is a smaller more intimate show with much more of a true comic book emphasis vs pop culture commercial appeal. (Though it does have a couple of popular guest -- Denise Crosby who played Security Chief Tasha Yar on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Jand Wiedlin of the GoGo's).

I'm imagining its pretty low key so I'm thinking this might be a fun event to take my daughter who likes to collect simple little head sketches of some of her favorite super heroes. There is a solid list of artists ... Frank Cho, Michael Golden, Aaron Lopresti, Mark Texeria ... just to name a few and since it's not crazy busy they'll hopefully be open to doing a few.

So I'm hoping to be there. I will say the San Francisco Tri Star Sports Collector's show at the Cow Palace is the same weekend and I did want to at least go to that one day. Maybe I'll do the Tri-Star show on Friday and the WOW! ComicFest on Saturday or Sunday.

So Sylent if you do go, I'm sure I'll be able to say hello and catch up with you here. So Fear the Spear!! Hey man, I already told you, don't matter how big you are, I'm quick and you know what they say ... "The bigger you are the harder you fall!"

Honeslty, as far as Conventions goes, I remember SuperCon being very lame. It's probably why there wasn't one last year. I mean, it was held in a metal tent that was probably the size of half a football field and attendance was really low. The highlight was meeting Marina Sirtis. However, since they're moving to the actual convention center from the metal tent is definitely a step in the right direction.

I guess it was a blessing then that I had never gone before! So maybe this year with the new better location everything will be better. We can hope! It sounds promising enough where if I'm not terribly busy I'll see if I can't check it out. Hope to see you all there.

The show wasn't TOO bad. I had low expectations and wasn't too disapponted. Besides, I got to meet Marina Sirtis and stare down her beautiful cleavage, got Crisis Mongul (the first one) for under $10 and got that Robotech animation cell of a Zentraedi for asking a question during the panel. I thought it was a pretty good day.

I still regret not asking for a sketch from Whilce Portracio though.

I think that's the key; to have very low expectations.

For now, it looks like I may head down to San Jose for this event. Mostly looking for some old back issues of the X-Men and maybe some action figures.

I may check this out. I can't remember the exact date of the wedding I'm supposed to attend though. I hope it's not that weekend.

I didn't realize this show is only a couple of weeks away. For those of you that live in the Bay Area, my friend owns a shop "Comic Ink" in Dublin, CA. and he's selling passes for this show $5 cheaper than buying at the door. Just food for thought.

This show is acutally shaping up to be decent with the addition of some C-list celebrities:

                      http://www.super-con.com/media_guests.html

                      DENISE CROSBY

                      VIC MIGNOGNA

                      HERB JEFFERSON JR.

                      MEET THE POWER RANGERS!

                      NAKIA BURRISE
                      Tanya Sloan/Yellow Ranger

                      WALTER JONES
                      Zack/The Original Black Ranger

                      CATHERINE SUTHERLAND
                      Katherine Hillard/Pink Ranger

                      VALERIE PEREZ

I didn't know Valerie was a big name cosplayer. I see her at just about every show.

I hope it's a really small crowd, as I have a couple of Adam Hughes covers that I would like him to sign.

Doesn't look good for me to go. Would have actually liked to but got schedule conflicts. Darth and Sylent please keep us posted. Specifically could you let us know on Saturday night what you thought? If it is totally awesome, maybe I'll bail on my appointments on Sunday and go!

Sure thing. Again, I have very low expectations for this Con in comparison to WonderCon and SDCC. Additionally, I don't expect much in cosplay either. However, I look forward to shopping for back issues of Uncanny X-Men, Marvel figures and prints.

I want to get a signed Greg Horn print of Captain America.

Good. One less person looking to spear me.

It's bad enough that I'm randomly showing up on pornstar's websites. I don't want to be the one guy kicked out of the show for creating a domino effect on the con booths.

That'll most likely be Primus'. The only internet access I have on the weekends is my Blackberry and my wife's iPad... and it sucks typing on both. Still, I can chime in and give the show a thumbs up or down. Don't look for a detailed response though.
