Ion you have apparently missed things. Both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth both signed contracts that included their pay amounts for those appearances in Star Trek 4. This was before Star Trek 3 was released, as getting those appearances guaranteed was a internal plan to help convince those they borrowed money from to invest in more projects.

The recent negotiations between the two actors and Paramount wasn't them wanting more money. It was Paramount attempting to talk them into taking less then they had already agreed to by contract. Most of the Trek cast has also had attempts by paramount to get them to agree to lesser fees for their appearances in the movie. Which is why when Pine and Hemsworth announced they were walking away, most of the rest of the main cast announced they were also walking. So unless Paramount pulls a rabbit out of their hat and comes up with the money they need to fund the film at the levels it's going to require given actors and VFX, we can consider Trek 4 in the JJ reboot universe dead.

Also keep in mind that when Paramount does talk everyone into bottom-of-the-barrel productions, we get movies like Final Frontier and Insurrection. Only this (combined with all the corporate crap mentioned below) would probably be worse.

      • Yeah I dont want to see Star Trek on a shoe string budget again. That's what tv is for. I'd rather the current movie franchise end. They can deal with eliminating the kelvin timeline in the next tv show.

In fact, I'm tired of Trek mining the past and the technology not matching up to TOS. I'd rather see them jump ahead of TNG in the timeline and continue from that point. Pick up decades after Nemesis and start a new cast and crew of a new Enterprise.

        • That does seem like the no brainer idea. I mean, there'd be no continuity nightmares, they could set the tone of the show however they wanted since it was covering a new era, and they'd have the option of stunt-casting the folks from TNG/DS9/VOY in guest roles if they didn't set it TOO far in the future.

But then they can't do Kirk, Spock, Spock connections, original Enterprise and Pike... things all fans want!!

It's like throwing Richard Pryor into a Superman movie. Some studio guy thought he was being "creative."

Really? I could do without them, and I think I'm a fan. Or were you being sarcastic?

And who says they couldn't do such things anyway, were they so inclined? Heck, we had Spock, McCoy, Sarek, and Scotty all interact with the TNG crew at one point or another, and Sulu and Rand even showed up on a Voyager episode (albeit in flashback). Kirk, Scotty, and Chekov were all in Generations, too, leaving Uhura as the only TOS main cast member who hasn't appeared in any Trek since the end of the TOS movies.

                • Yeah, it's such a mess going back. Enterprise did it well mostly but even they fudged continuity in some annoying ways (Romulans having cloaks too early, Ferrengi popping up, etc.). Moving ahead is the most freedom.

                  • I think Andrew was dripping with sarcasm there lol.

I mean, Spock, Kirk and TOS crew is what made me a fan and my preferred part of Trek. But I think TNG showed you can go on with new cast and ships. My only stipulation is that a show use a ship called the Enterprise. Make it 1701 F or G. Like you said, they can still bring back TNG era actors to make appearances. I think that's a great idea. Jump ahead 30 years after Nemesis.

Because if you think about it, how long can they do the Kirk crew? The current cast is basically done. If they don't use THEM, they have to recast again. To do what? Keep retelling the same 5 or so years over and over again? At least the movies moved forward and did new things with that cast. I really don't want to be around for Khan to be done again for the first time.

                    • Ed and SC bring up another great point: continuity. It's much easier to keep continuity straight when you are creating it on a blank slate instead of dancing around it by retelling the same time period over and over. Give time travel a rest for a while too.

I'd love to see a pilot episode where a retired Admiral Riker is present for the launching of the new Enterprise 1701G. Maybe chatting it up with the new captain and giving some words of advice before they head out on their first adventure.

It's interesting that you bring up the registration lettering. It's a small thing, but I think it was brilliant that when TNG premiered there were two whole Enterprises we knew nothing about. This allowed them some leeway and the potential for future "whatever happened to . . . " stories (which they did for B and C).

                        • That was a HUGE mystery to me when I was a kid! At that point I was seeing every movie on opening night and watching TNG as it aired. So it was killing me that there was a B and C whose adventures we weren't privy to. Gave Trek kind of a mythic feeling like when Obi Wan mentioned the Clone Wars or in ASoIaF we hear about Robert's Rebellon but don't know all the details.

Eventually we DID get to see B and C, which was cool, but I like that buffer period. I wouldn't want them to go back to E or right to F. Let us stew in it for a while.

                            100% sarcastic.

                            • A while ago I bought all of the eaglemoss Enterprise ships for the regular line for a display I am making. A few of them have some scale issues with the other ones, but I can overlook that for the price and the coolness of having one of each Enterprise on a shelf. Now I am looking at Eaglemosses XL line of larger ships they are doing. I really just want one Enterprise and have been poking through them. My 3 favorites are TOS, the movie refit and the D from TNG. While the refit is my all time favorite design, watching youtube reviews I am seeing some design problems and lazy mistakes eaglemoss made making the XL version of the refit. I think I am just going to play it safe and get the XL version of the original Enterprise from TOS. From everything I have seen, it is pretty spot on.

In scale, the NX would practically look like a shuttlpod next to E.

The refit is my favorite too, though A is close (I like some interiors on A overall, but the nacelles and overall outer design is more pleasing in the refit).

In the Berman era, I actually like E more than D. I always though D was too topheavy. Oddly, I have to admit that E looks like it should be smaller though it's actually much bigger than D. I also thought the interiors were too muted in TNG. TOS was so colorful and while TNG felt more homey because there's families and more nods to living space, there was way too much grey and beige for my taste. And man are people into negative space in the 24th century. NOBODY has cluttered rooms. Sure, they're personalized, but everyone has like five personal items in their whole quarters.
