I never saw the original but I liked the remake to the last house on the left.

        Never say die.

The genre is cyclical. People always say it's dead, then suddenly it comes back with new life. All it takes are new young film makers, and new hooks. Torture porn was big for a while, and went away. Same with slasher movies. In a few years it'll come back with something else.

Both versions of Last House On The Left are good and worth watching. I haven't seen the original since I was a kid,so maybe it doesn't hold up as well as I think it does, but just check it out.

also i wish they can make one battle royal film to determine who is the best horror villain

              freddy

              jason

              pinhead

              meyers

Ehh...Freddy Vs Jason? Classic. Adding more monsters to the movie would just kill it. It was a matchup made in heaven and it's time has come and gone. Any more attempts would be like the AvP movies. Terrible.

My main fear about a remake is it would probably focus on flashy effects and try to recapture the slasher image they tried to create for the cenobites with the 3rd and 4th movies. I also really hate this TV show idea they are tossing around, as well.

The first movie, and the original novella 'The Hellbound Heart", wasn't so much about the cenobites as it was the shit that floats around in the human heart. The less is more approach of the 80's version was just flashy enough to make gore-hounds happy, but low key enough that it didn't overshadow the story- which really was what set Hellraiser apart from other horror movies of it's time.

@Mr Weirdo, the Hitcher remake wasn't great, and it doesn't hold a candle to the first. But it did have a few good moments worth at least one watch.

I think the biggest misunderstanding is grouping it with slashers. People want to add Pinhead in the same category as Michael, Jason, and Freddy but at least the first Hellraiser wasn't anything like that.

He was really cool. Normally at conventions I'm in the chair for all the walking but I tell the people I can walk and stand for a photo. Romero didn't even wait. He just got up and bent down to the floor. Very nice man.

More than I realized. Should've started this sooner.

Personally, I don't mind when it's more underground. I don't need there to be 10 mainstream horror movies out every week. It's not fully gone yet, anyway, there's usually at least one horror movie playing at my multiplex.

Stephen King wrote an excellent 2-part article for Fangoria a few years ago on the status of modern horror cinema. He cites these 2 interestingly. He argues very forcibly for the remake over the first saying the 1st is all torture porn (sadistic voyeurism) while the remake has a real plot and meaningful revenge. I don't know if I completely discount the original (made with the combined forces of Friday 13th's Cunningham and Nightmare's Craven), but I think he might be right.

I actually have the original but that's because back when I got it (before Netflix) no place would rent this movie!

BTW: Last House itself is a "remake" of a 1960 Swedish film called The Virgin Spring.

No, it's a great thriller with a twist at the end .

The Original Last House of the Left was disturbing for me the first time I saw it. I rented it from a video store on vhs when I was a teenager expecting a pretty normal Wes Craven film and what I got instead was a student film where Wes Craven was not worrying about appealing to or making anyone happy. I saw the remake and truthfully I think it was pretty toned down compared to the original.
