No, the decisions from Hollywood on original content vs. adapted doesn't have to do with the costs of writing a script. It's for the reasons you stated, you're banking on the popularity of the established brand. Which is almost always a more comfortable gamble than releasing something brand new. My original point was that you'd save money anyway, it wasn't the main point I was originally trying to establish. I haven't been a fan of the extended universe, but it kept the Star Wars franchise relevant over the years.
Now that Disney bought Star Wars and is planning on having a new Star Wars movie out every year after 2015 is awesome. I'm sure the extended universe will have some influence on the next Star Wars trilogy and stand alone spin offs.You just witnessed the strength of geek knowledge. N.W.A., Nerd With Attitude.
