  • Deliverance -- 1972

Perhaps the most harrowing movie ever made, this made Burt Reynolds a star. His co-stars are Ned Beatty, Ronny Cox and John Voight, the latter best known today as Angelina Jolie's father. James Dickey, who wrote the novel and the screenplay, plays the sheriff.

I didn’t know the writer was the sheriff.

The film turns 50 today, but I’m not sure if I’ll have the time to watch it again (got a meeting tonight and house work this morning).

Dickey complained that his script got changed, so he published it in book form. I assume that director John Boorrman changed it.

The novel was published first (Cox even talks about having read it before they came to him with the script). I watched the movie after all (in the afternoon) and then the special features at night. Dickey was a on set for a while and tried to take over. Boorman kicked him off. A very good movie. Glad I re-watched it.

Dickey published his screenplay after the movie came out..

Dickey's son said he was not a good father.

I think the movie is effective because you can identify with those four guys, who were just minding their own business when all those things happened to them.

Burt Reynolds insisted that he do the scene himself were he goes over the waterfall in a canoe, instead of letting a stuntman do it. He injured his tailbone, and it hurt for the rest of his life.

They interview him in the special features and he doesn't say anything negative about his father, but you can tell from the various stories that he'd be a difficult man to deal (let alone live) with.

              Some good pieces about Deliverance.

Something even James Dickey might not have been fully conscious of is that it's about class conflict. That's what's roiling the United States right now.

Many middle class people who live in that region hate Deliverance, but the movie wasn't about them. It was about the people who today use or sell meth.
