Day 3: Be called a racist or a traitor to your country?

Traitor to my country. My country has done some shady shit. So much shit that I could never never never never never never be racist. But I could definitely see myself not caring about America in some fashion.

Day 3: Be called a racist or a traitor to your country?

Definitely Traitor to my country. People here in the UK have done and said some real shady shit(Like keep Britain for the British, Kick all foreigners out, etc. It disgusts me, to be honest. Even my mother is the same.), so much so that I could never really be considered racist.

                  I'd rather be called racist.

Why? Because I know I'm not (at least not consciously, or to a great enough degree to deserve such a label, IMHO), and I really don't much care about what people wrongly label me as. But being called a traitor, if people were really convinced of such, could lead to serious legal complications, even if (since I'm not one) it didn't actually lead to conviction.

This to a word. And if the question actually implies I'm a different person (because I'm neither of these things, I hope) and am forced to truly become one of these things, I'd still pick racist because the large majority of them are jerks who hurt people's feelings and aren't well loved, but a traitor to the country could actually lead to many, many deaths and that would be worse, imo. E.g., I'd rather be known as a Mel Gibson than the guy who let 9-11 happen.

I'd really zoned out when I picked Traitor earlier. To be honest the way you two described it is exactly how I think so I'm changing my answer. I'd absolutely rather be called Mel Gibson (I was actually compared to him once), then the guy who let 9-11 happen, and caused numerous deaths.

Traitor to the country could also just be a guy who burns his flag or dodges a draft. You don't think racism can lead to a bunch of murders?

I'd rather be Edward Snowden than a Jim Crow laws supporter.

Over here you would have to do something really fucked up to be called a traitor. Also, where I grew up (where murders more often than you would believe and on pretty much every other street at one point or another), believe me, it wasn't racism that lead to murders, they just happened. Sounds a bit odd, but I grew up in London, everybody was racist.

Well, the question is which would you rather be CALLED.

I'm not in a position where, even if people believed I was racist, it would lead to legal problems. I don't do hiring or housing, or any of that stuff where my supposed racism could lead to legal action. Things might be awkward with some of the people I know of different races, unless and until I could convince them otherwise, which would be unfortunate, but in the long run would probably be a minor bump.

Being believed to be a traitor, though, can be a lot more problematic.

If it were a question of actually BEING one or the other, the question would be a lot more difficult. Being an actual traitor is still likely to be more legally problematic than being an actual racist, but being a racist is more certain to be MORALLY problematic. I can conceive of situations where I might technically be considered a traitor, without being as morally repugnant as pretty much any situation where I am accurately being labeled a racist. (Though obviously both labels CAN come from actions and attitudes that are EXTREMELY morally repugnant, and both CAN have dire consequences.)

No, that's true, but the Jim Crow laws haven't been around for a while. And when's the last time you saw a flag burner called a traitor to the country?

When I hear racist (and I assume the question is asking from my perspective of a racist or a traitor) in my modern, American context I think of some guy who says derogatory things and wears a Confederate flag. When I think of traitor to the country I don't think of a protestor, I think of someone like Robert Hanssen, whose betrayal led to the death of multiple federal agents.
