Well, you're right, from a practical standpoint.
There is an argument (and this is where the Star Wars "purists" are) that once a work of art is out there for the public it is out of the creator's hands. It belongs to the fans/consumers. Tolkien believed this. George Lucas, JK Rowling, and others do not.

Well, you're right, from a practical standpoint.
There is an argument (and this is where the Star Wars "purists" are) that once a work of art is out there for the public it is out of the creator's hands. It belongs to the fans/consumers. Tolkien believed this. George Lucas, JK Rowling, and others do not.

George Lucas USED to believe this, too. He lobbied Congress for legislation, back in '88, that would have forbidden altering films without the director's permission (so a dead director means the film is locked in), and REQUIRED, if changes WERE made, that the original version MUST still be made available for purchase.

Lucky for his future self it failed, I guess, as it would have prevented some of what he's doing now, made some of it problematic, and required him to provide the consumers with the unaltered originals in any case, which he steadfastly refuses to do.

I'm not touching this. In 6 months, they'll probably come out with a super, spectacular 3D edition. I'm sick of it. I have the regular DVD set and for now, that's good enough for me.

i love sw just as much as everyone else but im happy with the dvd set i have from 2003-2004

3D won't be out until they have a run at the theaters, they are converting them as we speak and plan to release them in sequential order starting in 2013.

Obviously, the line of thinking is not just exclusive to films that Lucas directed himself, as he's been taking liberties with the films (Empire/Jedi) directed by Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand for years now. Lucas has deemed himself the auteur that can define, and redefine, and redefine, AND redefine the trilogy until he alone is satisfied. Much to the contempt of fans, but continuing to tinker with something that fans are so clearly passionate about isn't even an issue, because Lucas unashamedly refuses to acknowledge that they have any part in it.

Yup, and if the legislation he championed back then had passed, he would be legally unable to touch Empire now since Kershner is dead (and would have had to get his permission prior to that for any changes). Like I said, lucky for him, it didn't pass. Not so lucky for us.

I wouldn't particularly care what he did with his version of the films if he would just give us a decent transfer of the originals. The DVD of the original cuts in a box, which is really annoying to watch.
