Well, I fell prey to the blu-ray sickness.....

About a year ago, a friend bought me a blu-ray player. Since then, I have only one blu-ray disc that was also a gift, as I still buy DVD's. Lo and behold, I got the Star Wars complete saga last Friday and started watching it. I'm not totally aware of all the changes (any made to the prequels?) so I will discover as I watch. This is probably the fourth or fifth time now that Lucas has sold me the same thing tweaked in different ways, and honestly, I don't mind. Aside from the Greedo shot, I thought the last set off changes were decent, and I'm hoping for the same with the blu-rays. Star Wars was such an integral part of my childhood that I'm happy it has grown with me.

That's not a lot of money for me, but the average middle to lower class family- that's a lot to ask for an investment in a new format.

The hardware sales for Blu-Ray were down, but of the people that bought blu-ray players, including PS3s, owners bought a meager 1.5 movies per household. The report suggests that DVDs remain “good enough” for most titles, and the cost simply cannot be justified by most households.
Yeah, I can confirm this. I bought a PS3 earlier this month, but I still have an old CRT tv that is incompatible with HDMI. So when I bought my first BluRay and discovered that I can only watch it in black and white, I stopped buying BluRays. Yes, I've got a few on my Amazon wishlist, but there's no hurry to get them until I've got a new TV. And since 3D tvs are getting more and more affordable, I'll rather save money for a bit longer and get one of those in 2012 instead of buying a 2D HD plasma TV and a couple of BluRay discs next month.

There is an argument (and this is where the Star Wars "purists" are) that once a work of art is out there for the public it is out of the creator's hands. It belongs to the fans/consumers. Tolkien believed this. George Lucas, JK Rowling, and others do not.
Where has JK Rowling changed her work after it was published?

I was thinking of Pottermore and her comments reinterpreting her own books (which I've heard some fans complain about), but it's a poor analogy, so I'll drop it. Who else has pulled a "George Lucas"? There has to be others. I wouldn't necessarily list director's cuts here. For instance, Ridley's cut of Bladerunner was an actual intended cut of the film that the studio changed.

That would be, arguably, even dumber than the underwhelming way in which he met his fate. There are only two reasons to put that in, and only one of them is, IMHO, a legitimate one for a feature film.

One is to set up his reappearance in a later film (which is almost certain to never happen at this point, I think, but if it WERE...).

The other is solely to please EU fans of Fett, despite such a scene's total irrelevance to the movie at hand.

Can you guess which I think would be a legitimate reason?

It is one thing to toss in some little easter egg in the background of a scene that actually advances the plot. It is another to unecessarily bring the viewer BACK to a location that is no longer relevant to the movie, solely to show them the survival of a character that is ALSO no longer relevant to the movie.

(But yeah, Boba Fett went down like a punk, and I agree that was kind of a shame, and have no problem with the notion that he ended up surviving somehow. I just don't want to see it in the film. )

If Lucas ever decides to do a 7-8-9 trilogy, he needs to step back and let someone else direct the films...probably produce too. He needs to realize that his value lies in making the new stuff fit inside the Star Wars universe and to focus on character design.

Just for those that are a bit naive, if you are spending more than 3 bucks on a 6ft. hdmi cable, you're doing it wrong.
