  • What Direction Should GL2 & GL3 Take?

I think this is a good time to bring up where this series is going, if the first film succeeds in a big way.

I think they should focus on Sinestro & not Parallax as series villain. I don't want to see Hal go bad. It was a terrible mistake by the DC editorial staff in the lost-at-sea comic book era of the 1990's. Just about everyone hated it. Let's not enshrine it!

We have a great protagonist in Hal and a great antagonist in Sinestro. I'd like to see the filmmakers focus on that so we can get some real emotion when Sinestro's principles and neuroses cause him to split from the Corps; and so the effect of their dissolving friendship on Hal can be explored. It's a rare opportunity for depth in a superhero movie. If they go the Superman 3 / Spiderman 3 route, I fear they'll come up empty.

Seriously, they have the likes of John Broome, Denny Oneil, Steve Englehart, Len Wien, Alan Moore, Judd Winnick and Geoff Johns to draw stories & ideas from: and they're gonna go to Ron Marz?!?! No offense to Marz but he was never in that league! It makes no sense to me.

I'd really love to see the writers go to V2 1959-1969 for ideas: those stories are truly imaginative & wonderful! The V2 GLC comic was also rich in original ideas & concepts. I'd love to see Green Arrow as a support character in later films!

The first few issues of the Oneil/Adams run provide some nice story ideas, especially for humanizing Ganthet; his trek across America with Hal would make a nice subplot for the second film, something in the middle that can be woven around the major plotline. With the way things are going in the U.S. right now, and seeing how GL2 would be coming out around presidential election time, that could be very timely & effective. There's also Qward, the other Lantern Corps and the Alan Moore mythos to be explored. Personally, I can't think of a better story to base GL3 on than V2 issues 222-224!

Just some ideas for places the creative team can go for good ideas. They don't have to stick to the recent reboot. There's a vast store of material to draw from, just as Geoff Johns does in his comics!

    Just my .02c!

Best not to dwell on Sinestro for too long. If there is a second film then he should be arch rival but if they get round to making a third then making him the bad guy again could stagnate. It also does the mythos very little justice if it keeps coming back to the same bad guy all the time (See reactions to Lex in every Superman sequel). No point in making sequels if it's just the same thing again (unless you are Sergio Leone).

The sequel would/should be Carol becoming Star Sapphire and the fall of Sinestro. By the end he gets a yellow ring but doesn't emerge as the villain until the third.

If they go in that direction it would be pretty sweet because we could potentially see Zamaron, Korugar, and at the end Sinestro could be banished to Qward. All in the sequel.

Then by the third one they could have a Sinestro Corps War with an attack and ending battle on Earth. Mogo vs Ranx, Arkillo vs Kilowog, etc. That would be pretty sweet.

Yeah, I'd like to see Sinestro and Hal team up in the second one, butt heads, grow grudging respect, but then have a big falling out leading to Sinestro's downfall. Parallax had to be present because of the connection to the yellow rings, but needn't be the threat.

Third movie being a war of light is a great idea, and would deliver on the potential of a Jedi-Sith war we never got to see.

                This is easy.

In Part 2, Hal gets his rematch with Apollo Creed and wins.

Part 3 has Hal go head to head with deadly assassin Francisco Scaramanga and his golden gun.

In an unlikely part 4, Hal Jordan teams up with Lightning McQueen and the affable Tow Mater against drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and his army of undead soldiers. This DCE/Pixar blockbuster has guest appearances by Bruce Campbell, Ted Knight's dead body, and a box of deadly yellow frozen corn.

                      Two words.

                      CINEMATIC CLASSIC.

                      On par with Citizen Kane.

On a more serious note, I wouldn't want to dive too fast into the other colors of the emotional spectrum. Sinestro doesn't need a yellow ring or a connection to fear to rule Korugar with an iron fist. Neither does he need a Sinestro Corps for that. Besides, it's important that Hal isn't just in space. There needs to be something on Earth for him to come back to, and I don't just mean Carol.

So for my hypothetical sequel, I would divide Hal's time between space (where he fights alongside Sinestro against the Manhunters or Ranx or both) and Earth (where the Tattooed Man is a serial killer whose next victim will be Hal's brother). The stakes are high in both plots, and at the climax of the movie, Hal has to come to a decision: Support his best friend Sinestro on his homeworld Korugar, where he fights the Manhunters - or travel back to Earth to fight the Tattooed Man?
He decides to go to Earth, but tells Tomar Re to help Sinestro on Korugar. Which of course reveals Sinestro's fascist regime. Which means that Sinestro holds Hal responsible for his eventual banishment to Qward. From where he will return in part three.

Here’s my outline for the next GL films:

I really want to see the downfall of Sinestro be a choice, a decision, that he consciously makes himself. Having the yellow Fear Entity or a piece of it enter his body and control his thoughts would just be sloppy writing and nowhere near as dramatic.

Sinestro should be viewed as an antihero: a person who absolutely believes he is doing the right thing for the sake of the Universe, and that it is the Guardians who are misguided. There has to be a huge Universe-threatening enemy to fight, against which the Green Energy is ineffective, and so, as a desperate measure, Sinestro powers his ring with the Yellow Battery (which we should see at the conclusion of this year’s film, once Parallax is defeated and entombed in it) to defeat this enemy. Sinestro is the only GL who was able to defeat this enemy (with his YELLOW ring). He is regarded as a hero by some GLs, but there is condemnation from the Guardians. There is an immediate “trial”, right there, while all the GLs are still on Oa after the battle. The Guardians agree to cast out Sinestro for disobeying them, but before taking his ring, they ask Sinestro if he has anything at all to say in his defense. Sinestro announces to the Corps that the Guardians have ruled the GL Corps for too long, they have become unwilling to adapt to new threats and it is time for a change. He then asks the Corps “Who wants to fight the enemies of peace and justice with ME ?” “Who will join MY Corps?” And he flies off Oa with a handful of GLs.

They find a home on Qward, where plan their siege of the Yellow Battery on Oa.

There is a stealth mission to Oa, where Sinestro’s GLs manage to escape with the Yellow Battery. Now Sinestro begins constructing rings and recruiting Yellow Lanterns Kara-Sil, Kryb, Arkillo, Low, and others.

Meanwhile, the Green Lanterns plan their siege of the Yellow Battery on Qward.
The first battle of the Sinestro Corps War is fought first on Qward, then Oa, all while the Yellow Battery changes hands back and forth. This time, the Sinestro Corps really badly defeats the GL Corps, killing most of them, and they get the Yellow Battery once again. In addition to the Yellow Battery, with the GL Corps defeated and the Guardians incapacitated, Sinestro also takes time to study the Book of Oa, to learn its secrets.

Then the third movie returns to Earth.
One of the disgruntled members of the Sinestro Corps, Kryb, or Arkillo, (whoever) is more interested in Chaos than Order, and is planning to take over the Sinestro Corps. This yellow lantern also has a serious grudge against Hal Jordan from the War in the previous film, and feels powerless to defeat Hal, and so decides to create a new villian to destroy Hal Jordan by releasing the Violet energy to possess Carol Ferris, thinking that Hal couldn't bring himself to fight Carol Ferris. She becomes a Supervillian intent on destroying Hal Jordan. Kilowog, Tomar Re, and the other survivors from last movie help the Guardians recover, and together they begin to rebuild the Green Lantern Corps. Knowing Hal will not fight this new Violet Lantern, the Guardians create another ring and bring it to Earth; a former Marine sharpshooter, now architect, named John Stewart is selected to be the second GL of Sector 2814.

                            EDIT:
I thought of an exciting twist to my idea for GL3
if Hector Hammond is not burned up in this year's movie, and he exists as a giant head in a jail cell somewhere, by the third movie, he has evolved into a creature almost as powerful as the Guardians, and he reads Sinestro's mind, learns the secrets in the Book of Oa, and it is Hector who releases the Violet energy to consume Carol Ferris and destroy Hal Jordan. After Hal's death, the ring selects John.
