You had just retired then.
I've been looking back through Shatner's credits on IMDB. He got an awful lot of work before the Star Trek series premiered, and between the show's cancellation and the release of the first ST movie ten years later.
I saw that he was also offered the lead role in the Dr. Kildare television series and turned it down.
For someone who was unpopular among his peers and whose acting has been widely criticized, he never had to worry about how to pay his bills.
A funny thing about Star Trek TOS is that the show's ratings were right on the cancellation level for its whole three-year run. It became a hit and spawned theatrical movies and a television franchise only after it entered syndication.
^Yeah, what I usually hear is that it skyrocketed among college students and college-age kids in 70s syndication.
It was generally shown on weekday afternoons, like Dark Shadows was, which meant young people could watch it.
NBC moved Star Trek to 10 PM Friday nights in its third season. Gene Roddenberry knew that was a death trap for the show because young people don't watch television then, so he let Fred Freiberger run it while he worked on other projects.
Freiberger was a good writer but just didn't get Star Trek, which was why the third season was so bad. Leonard Nimoy had been a good friend of his but clashed with several times that season. Nimoy said that twice he want over Frieberger's head and appealed decisions he had made to Rodddenberry, who supported Nimoy both times. Frieberger was so angered by this that he and Nimoy never spoke again.
Is picard and strange new worlds worth checking out ? Loving tng
Absolutely not. I still shudder to think about the truly awful first season. Season 2? After a pretty cool first episode it nosedives into like this angry empty headed liberal agenda of talking points (ICE is evil, climate change, etc.) and writers who don't understand Picard or Seven. You will walk out of it very angry. You'll notice that each episode has about 20 producers for some reason, which makes sense.
