I wasn’t sure about that. That was my first reaction but when they said something about an isolated environment I thought maybe it was modern.

Who knows; maybe they did write a dino island scene into the Trench, but I certainly don't remember one from the novels. I think the isolated environment they refer to is most likely another area of the Mariana Trench, as the novels frequently fell back to that area. As a matter of fact, Alten left us on a cliffhanger in the last novel in the Trench when the group discovered yet another species of giant predator living there; one that could be fatal to the big guys.

That scene was (from my take on it) more of a historical flashback scene of who really ruled the roost 65 million years ago. T Rex might have been king on land, but he was more kindling when he dipped his toes in the ocean. That was taken directly from the Origins novella.
