Josh Trank quickly deleted the tweet in which he disowned the movie, but posting it was a terrible blunder. He should have kept his mouth shut until it had made all the money it was going to to make, and then defended himself. He chased away a lot of its potential business, and you just don't do that if you ever want to work again in Hollywood. A director's chief responsibility is to make sure that a movie doesn't lose money.Comment

A director works for a publicly owned film company. He's an employee. He's handed a lot of money to make a movie, and it's his job to turn a profit with it. Or at the very least not to lose money.
The guy didn't just make a bomb movie that lost money. He also caused it to lose more money than it would have if he had just kept his mouth shut for a few weeks.Comment

Honestly, I think Trank and Fox are both to blame for this film. Trank for basically trying to make a big budgeted remake of Chronicle, and Fox for trying to stop-him and then messing with the film, making it into a total mess in the process, simply because they don't want Marvel to get the rights back.
